I've been a San Francisco Chronicle subscriber for many years now. My dad used to subscribe for the 3 months free (get six months for the price of 3 months) introductory offer and than cancel until it was offered again. I enjoy reading the paper so I've been paying regular subscription price.

I was paying almost $200 a year for daily delivery! Considering I get most of my magazine subscriptions for free, this was definitely a luxury item.

The Chronicle now offers a Friday-Sunday subscription for $19.99 for the entire year! Apparently, they don't want to advertise this rate. When I called in to change my subscription, they asked if I wanted the Sunday only option. They charge $33 every 12 weeks for Sunday only. Doesn't make sense does it? When I told them I wanted to $19.99 offer, he interrogated where I had heard of this offer. Not sure if there's a law or some reason for this crazy billing practice but I'll take advantage of it.

By the way, over in that other forum I read (FW), there's a thread that mentions you can also get a $10 gift certificate if you sign up for credit card billing. That brings the price down to $9.99. Not bad!

Note - choose Home Delivery on the left hand side, once you get to the Chronicle site. It will ask for your zip code and then bring you to the delivery options

Thanks for pointing out the great deal! Just one thing to watch out for though--I've noticed that the Chronicle subscriptions people are generally amongst the most aggressive and rude people out there, especially in their telemarketing practices. Here's an example of a conversation that my mom had with one of their telemarketers about a week ago--telemarketer calls early in the morning on a weekend when I'm trying to catch up on sleep:

*Ring Ring*
Chronicle person: Hey! You're gonna be getting the Chronicle in 3 days!
My Mom: What?
C: Yeah, you'll be getting the paper in 3 days.
M: I never asked for the paper--I don't want it.
C: Well, why don't you want it??!!
M: I don't have time for this (bangs phone down...)

Yeah, so I would think twice before doing business with them. Don't get me wrong, I like the Chronicle, I read it every morning on SFGate when I get into work. But just to let you guys know...

SFChronicle = Amateur paper

Take a look at how many articles are just clipped off the wire services or from other papers. I get pissed off just reading through the ones they do author and spotting all the grammar and spelling mistakes, as well as the lack of depth and detail in their stories.

I LOVE San Francisco. It's a world-class city and it deserves a world-class paper.

Until they improve their professionalism, read the LA Times instead. Now that's a GREAT paper.

WRT $19.99 Fri-Sun rate, I signed up for this a year ago and have really loved it. I thought that this would be a teaser promotion rate and that when they ask me to renew, they would jack up the price. Well, I just got my renewal notice and the price is still $19.99.

Their sports crew is superb, compared to the other local print media around, especially during the baseball season.

And although I don't read their specialty sections, their weekly Wine section is supposed to be the first major newspaper to offer a wine only section in the US.

still a bit expensive for me, but nonetheless, high quality stuff

If they ask, just say you saw a flyer in the newspaper. I pick up the sunday newspaper every once in a while, and a little postcard is always in there advertising this.

I would get it, but I also hate dealing in the subsription people. Before you know it, you'll be "resubscribed" at the full retail rate. Happened to me before...

Oh yeah...LA Times.
Monday paper: Big traffic jam on THE 405. Drive-by shooting in south central.
Tuesday paper: Another traffic jam on THE 405. Lotsa smog today.
Wednesday paper: Whatdya know. another big traffic jam. More smog. Lakers played some basketball.

Who the hell wants to read about L.A.?
