On the sidewalks:

CNN article

snippet:
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -- With its love of geek chic and congested streets, San Francisco might have been expected to embrace Segway, the environmentally friendly, self-balancing personal vehicle that promises to entice people out of their smog-spewing cars.

Instead, the city on Monday becomes the first large municipality to outlaw the Segway Human Transporter on its sidewalks -- more than a month before the chariot-like vehicles are made available to the public.

Good. It's stupid to think you can have those things rolling around on the sidewalks without people getting run over.

Well bicycles, mopeds, rollerblades, skateboards, etc... are all banned from sidewalks. Why would the Segway be any different?

Too many bums sleeping around the sidewalks. Too many parked shopping carts next to the bums.

What a moron.

Anyways. They are outlawed the same as any other type of moving device on the sidewalk (minus wheelchairs and such). Plus those things are way too big to be on the sidewalk and allow comfortable walking room for the people around them.

You're kinda wacked out huh? Didn't take your meds today?

They don't want 60lb scooter rolling down the sidewalks and you launch into a rant about democrats and sex-changes? WTF?

Would you like to be hit by these things on a busy city sidewalk?

The hills? I wonder how much power those things have. Could they make it up the hills? I took my gf and the boy out to Coit tower sunday and watching him, he is 2, trying to walk the hills was funny. I did convince him to try and run and he was going as fast as my gf was walking. He was trying dearly though, hahhahahaha.

Motorized wheelchairs are for the handicapped which seem to get treated special in many circumstances. Are you against that too?

Segways are being treated just like bikes, motorized scooters, and such and are not allowed on the sidewalks. They can still ride them on the street or bike lanes just the motor-scooters and bikes.

Hehe, that was exactly my reaction when I heard the news. What a bunch of fearmongering idiots, outlaw a transportation device that can get cars and taxis and other gas emitting monstrosities off the streets. The Segway is obviously too advanced a notion even for my fellow intelligencia to grasp. I agree. What a bunch of morons. This decision was just plain dumb. Picture a world where the sidewalks are covered with Segways and some dodo says we got a guy out there walking on his two legs. Stop the world. We have to outlaw the Segway cause somebody might hit him. San Francisco should outlaw cars. Horses are much safer and the pigeons can eat the horse poop.

Well it was a bad Memorial Day weekend in San Francisco today, ladies and gentlemen. 750 pedestrians were killed in the three days on our sidewalks by Segways topping last years kill by 48. Many of the fatalities were doubtless the result of the new sport Segway Bouncing, where contestants try to hurl Segway riders record distances by throwing ones own body under its wheels. Many of the deaths can apparently be attributed to some unscrupulous Segway riders modifying the people catchers that have recently been introduced to prevent the Segway from rolling over the Segway Bouncer gamers. These vary from spikes to high voltage electrical discharge. And so it goes in the unending battle between the People of Segway and the Foot Earthers who claim that if God meant us to roll he would have made us with wheels.

I think SF has the right idea. AFIC, the Segway is a lame idea. I hope they sell both of them and quit business.

They're not a bad idea per-se (they'd be kind of handy in large factories where foreman have to move around), but I agree they're a terrible idea on the sidewalks with people. Most people wouldn't do 15mph on a crowded sidewalk on a bike or a scooter, and there's no way those weigh in at 60lbs. Add 60lbs to the average 200+ fatass who's too lazy to walk and you've got a lot of momentum there.

You see a lot of states that has a special lane for bikes. Maybe they'll start doing that for segway. :)
