I'm getting a lot of recommendations on Pacific Beach, Mission Beach and Balboa Park...sounds like I'll check those out. I'll be staying near the Gaslamp district (one of the few things I know about this trip) and if there's any decent theater in SD, I might catch a show.

There is a "haunted" house in Old Town San Diego. It's called the Whaley House, the tour is kind diy but it is pretty creepy. There are many, many restaurants all down the road from there too. I saw one place making it's own tortilla's...yummy! :)

Haven't been since I was 10

Tie up loose ends, man. Buff up your karma.

First, return all your seriously overdue library books, then go apologize to Thelma Gunderson for repeatedly pissing in her rose garden.

We'll discuss the rest later.

LOL, whaaaaaaaa?

I was there for all of like 3 or 4 days, not long enough to repeatedly piss in any one spot :p

They took out the seals and made it into its original intent: Children's pool. The original donor, Ellen Scripps, intended it to be a safe pool area for kids until the seals invaded it. They've kicked them out, and cleaned out the area.

The beach cities in the north area very nice.
Just walking along harbor blvd (errr... well, i guess biking would be better) is very nice.

Going down La Jolla Shores Dr. is always nice (heh, I work right along that road; if you see a big, unused, white satellite dish pointing upwards, I work there).

Well, if you're young and love to party, sure head over to Pacific/Mission Beach, but otherwise, avoid those areas like a plague. I like Ocean Beach better for my outings since it's a lot more chill. Those areas are more for locals. I don't think they're tourist-friendly. Pacific Beach has quite a history, and lined up with excellent mom-pop restaurants, but good luck even driving there. Traffic around PB is horrendous around rush hours.

If you want to see nice beaches, head over to Hotel Del Coronado, La Jolla Beach, and all the other northern beach-cities (Solana Beach and so on).

i agree with dan, i much prefer ob's nightlife as opposed to pb. i hung out in pb this past weekend after a 5 year absence and i quickly remembered why i never go there after 6pm. parking stunk, im getting too old for the crowd, and i swear all of san diego's sheriff's department were all relocated there for the last-caller's. it was a wreck.

edit: if you're into theater, go see a show at the old globe.

Well, that's not how Thelma remembers it, and that woman can hold a world class grudge!

I just saw a list of what's going on at the Old Globe and I think I'll go for a show Saturday night if I can get a last-minute ticket...problem is that it's opening night for the new show (I think), which could complicate things.

I'll keep in mind what you've said about PB and OB, thanks!

Well, you can take a bus up to La Jolla to the La Jolla Playhouse. They generally have something good. It's kinda like the broadway in SoCal. La Jolla is really overpriced near La Jolla Cove. I usually only pick up a coffee at the Living Room when I go near that area.

Okay, so I booked the Sheraton Suites on priceline, decent rate, location's okay. I did a search and saw that the SD Bike Shop is right down the street - would it be worth it to rent a bike for a few hours/day to ride around the city? I'll have a rental car, but that was mostly just to get to Stone Brewery.

Any suggestions on a good independent local restaurant to try out? Can be "cheap" or pricey, I just want good food.

I wish I had a library card here in Phoenix, I usually take out a copy of Frommer's guide to each city.
