I have a Zalman 120mm cpu cooler on this processor, i pushed it to 2700 mhz and it's reading 48 degrees not loaded, it runs at 40 without any overclock.
My board it's Epox with Nvidia 4 Ultra

That is a little high, mine 3700+ is running 38C idle and maxes at 52C running the likes of superPI, and I've got it pushed out to 2.9. What voltage do you have the core at? How long have you had it there. my 3700 needed 1.55v to make it to 2.9 out of the box but, since I've been able to bring it down to 1.47v and retain stability. I can't for the life of me make 3ghz even at 1.55 but, it's nice to have brought the voltage down a bit, eh?

Maybe you could tidy up the cables in the case to make sure the CPU heatsink/cooler as enough airflow? What's it like with the side panel off the case?
