US market is pretty large, and Samsung has quite a presence here.

BTW technically panel type is PLS.

That's a really nice panel; would someone want to buy me one? I did notice that you have to use DP to get it at 60hz and that hdmi is only 30hz.

Sure but plenty of high end displays never make it to the U.S. Market, most recently the Asus PA328Q but do make it to the European market. Also the European market usually has more color choices for electronics such as white/silver options whereas the U.S. Market is typically limited to black.

This monitor has been available in Europe/UK for two months now.

It is available from marketplace sellers, probably imported from Europe as no official resellers are offering this in the U.S. right now.

I got one of these recently. A few points:

  • The most important spec for a FreeSync monitor which manufacturers are inexplicably reticent about: VRR range. If I'm interpreting AMD's FreeSync demo correctly, it is 40-60Hz, which I would consider the minimum acceptable (you need to use the panel's "ultimate" setting to get this range, otherwise it's a uselessly narrow 50-60Hz).
  • My sample has pretty bad backlight bleed in one corner.
  • The specified 4ms response time is not realistic. It looks similar to the HP ZR2740w that I replaced with it, which is specified as 12ms. Still, it's not bad for a 60Hz PLS/IPS panel.
  • It has a light AG coating which is perfect, preventing reflections without adding any grain.
  • Colour accuracy and contrast feel about par for PLS/IPS.

It's a good monitor. Picture quality is excellent, FreeSync really works, and I feel that it's a perfect size for 4k (works best with 125% scaling, but 100% text is still readable, and AA is hardly required in games). I would have preferred it if it was curved, and if the VRR range was wider (25-60Hz would be perfect).

Freesync range;
AMD Radeon™ graphics cards will support a wide variety of dynamic refresh ranges with AMD FreeSync™ technology. Using DisplayPort Adaptive-Sync, the graphics card can detect and set an appropriate maximum and minimum refresh rate based on the capabilities reported by the display. Potential ranges include 36-240Hz, 21-144Hz, 17-120Hz and 9-60Hz.

Freesync operates over the ranges stated above. Any limitations within those specs, ie 40-60, is due to the monitor's limits.

Unfortunately, that information provided by AMD is not helpful. The limits of FreeSync itself are 9-240Hz. All existing monitors cover a much smaller range within that. The ranges given in your quote are only examples of what that range could be. It's an important spec, but you have to dig to find out what it is for most monitors, and in the case of Samsung there is no official figure at all.

Looks nice but I keep on waiting for a 120hz UHD monitor 32". Like the look of the MG279Q but don't feel like just upgrading to higher refresh is worth it.
