I've been looking for an update to firmware for my samsung ts-h552u dvd-rw because its been making strange noises when it tries to slow down a dvd which is spinning in the drive. instead of just slowing down it makes a grinding noise and stops suddenly. i've downloaded samsungs firmware update program but whenever I try and update the firmware it says:

Due to a system problem, it is failed to operate a program by automatically connecting it.

Any idea how i can get this to work? I have no DVD in the drive, I have no other programs running.

If I'm not mistaken, most optical drives have to be set to Master for firmware updates to work (or be in the primary position if set to CS). If you have more than one drive on the cable with your optical, you could temporarily jumper them with the Samsung set to master and the other to slave and then rejumper them after the update. Also try using Safe Mode to do the update if doing the above still doesn't work. Or if there is a DOS firmware update proggie you could get, that might be even better. I can't remember ever having a problem updating firmware or BIOSes from a naked DOS boot diskette.

Another option is to try Samsung's "Live Update" software which both goes to the Samsung site to find a new firmware if available, downloads the .BIN file and then installs it. Shouldn't work any better than what you've gotten, but one never knows. Here's the page to DL the L-U proggie: http://www.samsungodd.com/eng/LiveUpdate/LiveUpdate.asp

I couldn't find a firmware update utility for DOS while I was digging around there. I also found that there was a US07 bios available at the L-U page while only US06 was available on the manual DL page here:

thats what I used, it gives me that error message I mentioned above. However I've since discovered that you can download the .BIN file and firmware installer separately and that seems to work. Although it hasn't fixed the problem with my drive making grinding sounds :(

Well your drive is probably getting ready to die or did one of your kids "feed" it something other than a disk???

The Samsung firmware updater even works through USB-IDE adapters, no master/slave problem there.

You should rather check whether there are any intermediate drivers that prevent the update tool from getting raw ATAPI access. Anything from CD-imaging helpers to an infection with DRM spyware would be on the list of suspects.
