Well, I found some more information and a picture of the 30-inch WQXGA Samsung panel (I had previously posted only vague info about the upcoming Samsung 27 and 30 inch LCD monitors). For the curious, the panel will be WQXGA (2560x1600) and have a contrast ratio of 1000:1, a brightness of 400cd/m2, a pixel response time of 8ms (grey to grey), and a 0.2505mm pixel pitch. Mass production is scheduled for Q1 of 2006!

Here's a picture (panel only without housing):

Sadly, I couldn't find any additional info on Samsung's new 27-inch 1920x1200 panel, but hopefully it'll make it to market at a similar time as the 30-inch. I'm also hoping Dell will adopt both of these panels early and be quick to market with affordable big siblings to the 2405fpw...

No idea on pricing. Hopefully it'll be significantly cheaper than the Apple. I'm not sure Samsung will want to sell the panel to Dell before they've had a crack at selling their own monitors with the panel (how long was the 243T out before the 2405fpw was released?).

I do know this, however -- I will live solely on noodles and water until I have sufficient funds to purchase this monitor...

Yeah, good luck finding a video card that can push that kind of resolution on modern games with a smooth framerate.

I wonder if the pixel density will be any different (higher/smaller pixels) than current 20-24" panels...if so, then scaling down might not be so bad.

At best, I'd run games at 1280x768 and see if the panel will scale it locked for 2x nicely

Ya, looks super nice to bad that high res would physically kill my comp and the price would too.

I hope these monitors come standard with HDCP, especially given that they are scheduled for release mere months prior to Vista.

Are manufacturers releasing HDCP PC displays (only one I know of is the Gateway)?

I believe the 2405FPW is an LG panel...not Samsung.

Yeah, it's hard enough keeping up with 1920x1200 in games, that would just be too insanely expensive to keep up with.

Nope, I was wrong...2405FPW IS a Samsung PVA panel...

Actually, WQUXGA is a resolution of 3840 x 2160, which means that you can have four 1080p programs running on one screen without any scaling of the image. In fact, a 56-inch "Quad HD" panel from Chi Mei Optoelectronics (CMO) is due for mass production in the 3rd quarter of '06. The panel itself will cost $10,000, so monitors and televisions based on it will be even more. It will have a contrast ratio of 1000:1 and a brighness of 600 nits. The TV is partially intended for "TV junkies who want to watch four high-definition channels at once in full resolution" and the image will require 1.4GB of data per second (what's the max of dual-link DVI?).

Thinking about 8.3 million pixels of super HD goodness on a 56-inch beast... Wow. And because the resolution is so high, you could almost place this thing a foot or two away from you on a desk and still not make out the pixels (dot pitch is 0.324mm)!

Can you tell me where you got your specs? I'm not saying they are wrong but the specs I saw were 14ms and 16ms response time, yours is the lowest I've seen. I'm not claiming the others are right, it is just strange there are so many different ones posted.

What I'd really like to see is a spec comparison of the 2405FPW and the 2407FPW.

Thanks

Here's the link -- the specs are about halfway down the page in a column with a blue background. The text is in Japanese (use Google to translate).

Just for anyone who wants a list of resolutions, Google: How Many Dots

Anyone know where there is a list of current dual-link DVI cards?
