Samsung claims it will have GDDR @ 2.0ghz effective (1.0ghz ddr) in a 256mbit BGA package by the years end, how is this is even a concievable goal when they cant produce the 1.1ghz GDDR3 in enough quantity to meet NVIDIA/ATI/Notebook OEM demands?

I understand they could probably get some very well binned chips or really crank up the latency, but they use the words MASS PRODUCTION in the press release, indicating there will be enough quantity to meet demand.

Yeah, that seems like an impossible jump. 1.1 -> 2.0 in one step? That last time something like that happened with memory was when they went from 33MHz to 66MHz fast page mode ram and that was a long time ago.

it does seem really fishy to me, i hope someone can shed some light on this.

personally i think samsung is on crack, even with a process shrink a ~90% clockspeed increase when they are already having trouble at current clockspeeds seems completely unrealistic, especially within 3 months time.

Actually, it seems like the GDDR3 supply has increased tremendously, since the 6800GTs are hitting the market in quantities greater than one card per hemisphere; it looks like the problem is more in ATI's fabbing than Samsung's. So for Samsung to be scrambling to get a 2GHz sample out isn't totally unreasonable.

Its not that Samsung can't get the volumes up. It's that they won't. They are enjoying a nice premium on their memories right now because of "shortages". Keep in mind that Samsung, Micron, and Infineon are being investigated at the Federal level right now for alleged illegal business practices.

Probably need to validate and get those puppies up and running for the NV50\R500 ;)

If I had a shitload of money I would pay development of a 256bit 2GHz, 40GB ramdrive as my bootdrive :D

^ This is probably the smartest thing I've heard you say on these boards!

NV50/R500, even if not actually commercially available next year and only in beta board form, would logically require substantially faster memory to keep up with the rumoured (massive) speed and architectural improvements, and a big jump from Samsung's memory to match these technologies seems to make sense.

The other thing that this memory would possibly be used for is Xbox 2 and/or other next-gen consoles, which are also on the horizon.
