Not long ago I heard that Samsung is going to overtake Apple in tablet market share in 2014.

Seems we'll see that happening sooner than expected.

Specifically, the company looked at visitors to Onswipe-optimized sites for the period of Dec. 26-29 in comparison to Dec. 19-22, as a way to measure the growth that different tablet platforms saw over Christmas.

Tells me all I need to know...

At my retail place we may sell 5 of the Samsung 7" Tab 3 (goes for $170 to $200 depending on the week) for every Samsung 10" Tab 3 (goes for $300 to $400) and we sell 5 10" Tab 3 for each single Samsung Note 10" 2014 ($550 to $600)

The Ipad Mini is $300, the Ipad Mini Retina is $400, the Ipad Air is $500 this is before accessories, before warranty, before greater storage options, etc.

Samsung is getting more marketshare for the prices are lower.

This only talks about growth since 2012, not market share. Samsung's tablets from last year were horrible, so it's not a surprise they'd have a big jump in growth now that they have some pretty decent Note tablets (Galaxy line is still crap though). I suspect Samsung's market share is still very small compared to Apple's.

That's too bad. The Note is awesome, but the Tabs are both overpriced and underspecced.

Psyched for the AMOLED Tab Pros though.

I am not disagreeing the Tabs are overpriced for the spec. (besides the infared transmitter) the Asus Memopad HD 7 has better specs for $129 to $149 (prices vary per week), same thing with the Memopad HD10 vs the Samsung Tab 10.

Yet the Samsungs sell more than the ASUS for various reasons.
  • People recognize the name and trust it (can't say the same for ASUS in the general mainstream conscious).
  • The Samsung has a bright screen saver and a nice background that shows off the colors and viewing angles of the ips screen. People notice this the Samsung pops while the other brands just have a generic boring background or the screen is turned off (due to customers messing with the demo and unplugging the charger). Because of the demo stand that Samsung provides there is no way to permanently unplug the Samsung so they always stay on.
  • The Samsung has higher margin (most of the time) and thus higher commission for the salesperson.
  • The Samsung has much more cases and accessories specifically made for the Samsung.

When the customer is willing to pay more than $400 for the tablet they are usually asking for the Surface or the Ipad (they don't ask for the surface by name, they ask for dockable tablets or the tablets with the attachable keyboards that can do office). Mainstream customers don't understand the difference between the note and the tab line of Samsung tablets.

The graph shows growth, not sales, since Samsung tablets were near 0 to begin with, they grew a lot. So many articles are SEO chum...

App downloads do suggest slower sales for the iPad this Christmas over last Christmas though. I see a ton of iPad 2's out in the wild, mainstream consumers are pretty happy with it, don't seem to care a lot about the resolution.

I do have a Samsung Tab 3 7" (Sprint variant) streaming TV next to me now :) It's surprisingly decent.

I wager outside of Apple the tablet market is far more sensitive to pricing than phones. I won't be surprised the cheaper but far more sucky Tab 7 manages to outsell N7 2013 several times.

Actually the reason why Samsung tablets are outselling Apple tablets is because of better pricing.

Why buy basically the same tablet for a higher price?

That's the logic of 99% of consumers these days.

Personally I'd be rather disappointed to wake up on Christmas morning to a Samsung tablet rather than a iPad, but I'm sure there are plenty of people who are just happy to have any tablet at all.

I sure wouldn't be, especially if it was a Note. The active digitizer becomes really useful on an 8 or 10" screen.

But... they're not outselling Apple tablets. That Q3 market share data shows Apple still outperforming Samsung by a wide margin, and that was in the quarter before the iPad Air / Retina iPad mini launched. This doesn't preclude Samsung closing the gap, but the odds weren't in its favour this holiday.

Also, "basically the same tablet" suggests you haven't been looking at the specs or reviews lately. The Tab 3 series reviewed poorly, and it didn't compete well against the previous-generation iPads; it certainly doesn't look good versus the Nexus 7, MeMo Pad HD 7 and other tablets that are either much faster for similar money or offer similar performance for less money. The latest iPads are unquestionably faster than Samsung's mobile tablets (including the Note series), and they usually have better displays, better build quality and better cameras.

As for the OnSwipe study, you can disregard it entirely. It's covering a too-small sample size and has questionable motives. OnSwipe is choosing the stats that will get sensationalist articles, not ones that present an accurate image of the market.

Your linked article didn't say Samsung is outselling Apple. And I haven't see anything that says that's happened. I believe Apple still has a pretty big lead in units shipped.

I'd love a iPad on X-mas, I could sell it to a sucker and buy two android tablets!

Sales-wise, the bottom line for most consumers is the dollar. Why buy an iPad Mini Retina when you can get a pair of Tabs for less? One for each kid! :D

Yup. That's basically every non-technical adult I talk to.

Then they complain to me at work after Christmas because they don't know how to use it

You know, I have a growing appreciation for Android tablets. I personally prefer the simplicity & "wall garden" of the Apple ecosystem; my iPhone is an appliance to me, not a tinker toy. But there are times & applications when you DO want something you can tinker with. I've been deploying HP Slate 21's at work as thin clients, which isn't something I can't effectively do with iPads. There's a kiosk app to lock everything but the RDP app out & and it works with both a keyboard AND a mouse. Zero maintenance for $399, extremely nice!

It's not for everyone, but I do feel Android is really starting to get their act together. The new ones don't feel so sluggish & have a lot of nice features like "OK Google" (always listening) and an insane amount of customizability - change everything from the lock screen to the GUI to the keyboard.

Android has really been there for years, its just you're seeing every manufacturer get their act together in the past 2 years.

There's no way you can go to a walled garden like iOS or WP after living in Android since 2009. Might as well go back to a flip phone.

Android is definitely improving, 4.4 is evidence of that, but I believe it still falls short of iOS on terms of making these devices like appliances rather than tinker toys, as you said. My desktop PC is a tinker toy, my tablet and smartphone are appliances, a means to an end.

#2 is almost meaningless when #1 probably out sold them 3:1 if not more. And #3's uhhh who exactly? I guess Asus? Samsung went from selling no tablets to selling more than Lenovo & Coby

they should be proud...

As my 8th grade PE coach use to preach to us, 2nd place is just the 1st loser.
