Anyone using the Samsung Spinpoint T 500GB 16MB cache hard drive? Looks pretty solid from the reviews I've read on forums. Was either thinking this one or the Western Digital 500GB one. Not really thinking about Seagate, i've heard mixed things about there drives lately. Anyways, do you guys think i should pick one of these samsungs up?

I bought the WD 500gb one because it was slightly cheaper. But it's going to be my storage drive, so I'll plug it in only during backups etc. If you're going to power the drive on every time you run your PC, I'd probably get the samsung. This site has a favorable T166 500gb review, but I'm not sure if they had the WD drive there. Should be equally reliable drives.

I ordered an OEM one from Newegg and it arrived dead. I don't think this is necessarily Samsung's fault though. The bubblewrap was partially burst when I got the drive, like it had been hit pretty hard at one point or another during shipping. My understanding from this and other forums is that Newegg uses a subpar shipping method for OEM drives.

The replacement that Newegg sent me has been working fine for a few months now. Noticeably faster than my old drive, and dead silent inside an Antec Solo. I literally don't hear the thing, even during intense access like Windows startup/loading games/unzipping/transferring files.

I'm pretty sure www.storagereview.com rates the Samsung highly. It would be a good idea to check out what they have to say about the drives you're looking at though. They're a good source for information on hard drives.

Both are good drives. I would pick Samsung T166 series over WD Caviar, but if you go with WD make sure to get AAK.. something. (It's like WD5000AAKSxx) Those are supposedly cooler and quieter.

Could you do a hd test and post over at our storage thread. I'm sure there are lots of folks that would love to see what it can do.
