Samsung SPH-N400 I want to love this phone. HELP ME! Is there a way to upgrade firmware? Is there a "fixed" version?

My mother ran out and got this as soon as the old PCS Phone crapped out on us and refused to connect. I knew the price was too good to be true. It's Vision-enabled for 3G wireless Internet service (Over 128k on a laptop with the connection cable). It turns out, this phone has SERIOUS problems, though they seem to be different for everyone.

In the four days I've had this phone it has locked up over 13 times, usually while hanging up or when hung up on. Sometimes I'll just pick it up off the desk and find it locked up with something like the volume settings displayed on the screen. Each time it locks up it requires the battery to be removed.

A shortcut on the directional pad always tries to connect to the 'net services or something. It displays "Press End to Cancel". Pressing it actually resets the phone causing it to have to reconnect to SprintPCS. I assumed this was just a sloppy way to do it, but it causes another problem: If the phone is plugged in, charging or fully charged, the phone will crash while starting up and return to the powered off state (Where it will display the message "Phone is charging" or something like that.)

Then there's the fact that you can't hear sh!t. I have not had a conversation yet without the person on the other end begging me to call back from another phone. The speakerphone function makes the problem multiple times worse. It's like the phone keeps cutting out the incoming and outgoing audio replacing it with muffled static. The speaker phone also sounds like the speaker is simply incapable of reproducing enough fidelity for intelligible voice.

It MUST be a fluke, right? I haven't heard of any reception issues with the phone other than mine (And I've heard conflicting reports about the speakerphone).

This phone is old enough to have near-final firmware, right? It doesn't seem like it's even legally decent. The menu system is full of so many quirks it's like the creators never tried to use it. It's impossible to use the screen without the backlight, yet it goes off every 8 seconds no matter what when the flip is closed (As it should be for games). Then the directional pad (Navigation button) doesn't support diagonals when the games require them. Also, you must have numbers programmed into the phone book and browse to them with the nave key to dial using speakerphone. Closing the flip after enableing speakerphone will hang up the call. I STRONGLY believe that this phone should be recalled. It's simply to flaky.

I looked up a little on Google, and I see alot of people that want to love this phone (It's 3G! Beautiful screen / phone! High-speed Internet! Speakerphone! Cheap price! Best phone deal in the industry if it worked as advertised...). Most of these people mention waiting for fixes or gettting tired of waiting and moving on... Most of these posts are from 2002 ;( I saw one mention saying he was asked to update the software on his phone. This doesn't seem to be possible from Samsung's site or Sprints. I assumed it was automatic, but I don't even know how to find the version I have. The phone info screen really is full of seemingly random numbers none of which claim to be the model no.

I WILL be returning this phone tomorrow if no one can help me find a fix / upgrade. PLEASE help! I want it so bad but this is unuseable! :(

Dude I hear your pain...I've had this phone for about a year and I'm so ready to throw it against the f'n wall. Sometimes I'll try to make a call and it'll just say "connecting" and never connects. Then I'll find out that some people have been trying to call me and the calls never goes thru. Then I'll try to turn my phone off and it will never full turn off, then I gotta pull out the f'n battery to turn it off and turn it back on. Also, I hate the fact that if you answer a call while you're charging the damn thing, it'll go to speakerphone. BTW, this speakerphone is the most f'n useless feature I've ever seen on a phone. I've never had the urge to use it. I never get good reception on this phone either. The wireless web is uber slow and sometimes I have to turn the phone off and on before I can even connect to the web. I'm looking into getting either the Sanyo 8100 or the Samsung A600 phone sometime really soon.

Hmm, I think I talked normally while it was on speakerphone once, but I did read about that very same problem.

I did notice something else: The "CyRace" game is unplayably slow. You get to move about 15 frames total at less than 1 FPS! "157MPh indeed! Could the phones ahve all been underclocked to solve some other problem? Perhaps it needed some of that performance for proper voice processing.

I'm heading to the Sprint Store first then Radio Shack.

I got the Samsung S105 and that also has TONS of bugs... After numerous calls to Tmobile and several replacements, I finally gave up on it and decided never to pick up another samsung phone again.

The first thing I noticed when Googleing is the number of formerly Samsung-exclusive users that got screwed over on this one and deciding to never go back. It's surprising what one generation of bad phones can do to customers like that. I had no preference. My old phone was the cheapest Qualcom (1260 was it?). The N400 says "Digital by Qualcom" so I'm not totally sure Samsung is to blame :)

I thought it may be OK JUST for making and receiving calls and using the cable to get my laptop online but if it locks up and misses incoming calls as frequently as it has already I guess I'll have to pass.

Qualcomm isn't to blame since they just provide the means of encoding and moving information. Samsung f'd up on this phone. I do hear that the latest firmware does fix many of these problems. Check with your local Sprint store.

I've got the Samsung r225m and besides having rare random reboots every once in awhile this phone does its job well.

The n400 does have some firmware updates and you need to take it to a Sprint store that does updates and have them update it. Call first because not all stores have this capability. Also this phone is probably Sprint's buggiest phone. I had this phone and dropped it so fast because of the random reboots and constant locking up. The features are great but the performance is subpar. When you get your update, ask them to update your PRL as well. This may help with your reception. Being a Sprint customer for a long time, I know that if you are really unhappy with the phone and threaten to leave, they will sometimes give you a credit to a new phone. Its worth a shot, good luck.

I got the latest firmware and its fine now, though sometimes when I turn on the phone the keytones are WAY TOO LOUD, as if they playing through speakerphone, but then it fixes itself after 30 seconds.

I hear Sprint PCS received so many complaints from this phone they've discontinued selling them...they've replaced it with the Nokia 3588 instead.

DEFINATELY TAKE A LOOK AT THE NOKIA 3588 IF YOU TAKE THIS PHONE BACK

No speakerphone, but its customizable, has an integrated (no bulge) antenna, and supports Vision with color screen etc.

Got the firmware upgraded. We'll see how this goes :) The Sprint Store rep, a previous N400 owner, brazenly mentioned "The Placebo Effect" as if that will have a factor in it crashing less ;)

I'll give it a few more days...

The "crash while plugged-in when connection to Internet is canceled" bug is gone. In fact, it now doesn't even try to reboot when you cancel. I guess they finally did it right :)

The speakerphone is still totally unusable. I haven't used the phone enough since then to know if normal reception is any better. I haven't had a lock-up since, though I have encoutered much strangeness (CONTINUALLY die once in Space Invaders before the game even starts! The Battery Low = Backlight Off event screws up what I'm doing in some applications. Etc)

Hmm.. I have this phone also. I have never experienced random reboots, but it sometimes takes an ungodly amount of time to connect after turning on, and it likes to randomly lose connection for no reason.

I have experienced one lost connection ("Connection Faded") since the upgrade. I read three bars on Samsung's traditionally "conservative" connection strength indicator. Strange.

BTW, it wasn't random. It was repeatable. Every time I bumped right on the navigation button it would launch some shortcut and try to connect to the web. The message "Press End to Cancel" would appear. Pressing it to avoid charges would reset the phone and force you to reconnect to Sprint. Now it simply puts you back on the main menu. Before, if the phone was plugged in it would always turn the phone off after it seems to be resetting. I'd call that a crash, but not a lock-up :p
