Hey guys,

I think my Samsung DVDrw is a dud but I'd like to see if there is maybe something I didn't try.

Model Samsung SH-222BB/BEBE.

It detects fine in the BIOS and gets power. I can insert media into it fine, but it never reads any discs. It failed to boot from the windows7 disk so I used an external USB dvd drive. Now that my PC is all setup (including the sata drivers), the Samsung DVD player still doesn't recognize anything.

When I double click on the DVD drive in "my computer" with a disk in the tray, it just opens the tray again.

The only "symptom" I notice with this drive is a rather unpleasant lurching sound when I first power on the system. I can't help but think it sounds alot like what my keypad-USB drive does when I plug it in using too small of a usb cable.

I've tried two different SATA ports on my mobo, no luck.

PC:

Asus P9X79 Deluxe mobo
3930k cpu @ 4.2 ghz
asus gtx680, the mid grade OC version @ 1084
Asus 830 SSD
WD hdd's in a RAID1

I obviously have the SATA mode to RAID currently, but I also had a previous windows7 install using AHCI and it still didn't work.

So safe to assume the drive is dead, or is there something else to try?

Thanks
Ryan

Probably a bad drive.
However, a couple of things to try:
1. Check the bios on how the drive is recognized. There's usually a default generic optical drive configuration, and then a second configuration that includes the drive's exact model number. That's the one to use, for the optical drive to be bootable.
2. Firmware update? Check: http://www.station-drivers.com/ for that.

Also: make sure the drive is connected to an Intel SATA port, and not to a Marvell or Asmedia SATA port.

Connect to another PC and give it a try. Otherwise they are dirt cheap these days, I would worry about it and but a new one, iirc, I saw one for $16 on newegg's promotional email...
I have bought many of them over the years and the Samsung one was the worst in experience, maybe it's just me, maybe it was a one in a 1000 bad piece, it was noisy and slow... I disposed it. My experience has been best with LiteOn and ASUS...

I'm hardly a statistically significant sample, but I've also had bad luck with Samsung DVD-RW drives dying. You most likely just need to replace your drive for $20.
