need a label correction

maybe im wrong but i thought i paid about the same price about 6 moths ago, for a sata dvd lightscribe burner

edit: yep just checked my newegg history on 7/26/2007 i paid 29.99 for the same thing.... guess prices havent changed much in a while

I bought the 203B for $28. Which is fine because I never use Lightscribe. I bought a pack of 10 lightscribe dvds a while back, and I've only used 5. So eh.

No kidding! I remember when "high speed" 2X CD-R's cost twenty bucks a pop and about half were guaranteed coasters. On top of that, the computing power back then and horrid interfaces used (PIO or Parallel printer ports *shudder*) meant if you so much as clicked the start button, you'd experience a buffer underrun and boom, instant coaster. I saved up for a SCSI setup, that Yamaha CRW4416S is still operational but retired of course 😀 Back then integrated fans were used to keep the burners cool as well. The CD's burned by that Yammy are still fully readable 😎

I just bought the Samsung with Lightscribe.

But have now just noticed that the Samsung w/LS doesn't mention anything about Operating Systems support.

The Lite-on w/LS does mention Vista Support.

I run Vista-HP-64 Bit, should i cancel the samsung order and get the Lite-on ?, or will the Samsung be ok ?

I'd rather have the Samsung.

Thanks for the Post OP.

It should work fine with any modern southbridge's native SATA ports. If you have problems, sometimes just moving the connector to other ports helps. I'm not sure how the RAID array will affect it as I think SATA optical drives require PATA emulation which disables AHCI/RAID.

I'm running Raid-0, so you think that a Sata Optical Drive will mess up my Raid Hard Drives ? Ouch that stinks.

I really don't absolutely need the Optical to be Sata cause my MB does have 1 IDE connector. Was just buying Sata cause it's future proofing. (better air flow as well)

Also I don't think my MB has "Native" Sata, i think it's only PCI Sata. I didn't notice it was only PCI Sata til' after i bought it, but that's not that bad cause i don't have alot of stuff running on the PCI Bus.

So hopefully the Sata Optical wont mess with my Raid setup.

Thx for the reply.

Luckily it will probably still work on the existing installation. The largest issue stems from trying to install an OS in AHCI mode where there are problems booting from the installation CD/DVD. It all depends on the individual setup, but I'd say chances are good it will function alongside the RAID.

edit- if your Vista install does not have SP1 yet, this hotfix might help.

ROFLMAO!

my first CD-ROM was memorex and it looked like a deskplay cd player with a scsi cable.

ahahhaa... and i remember buffer underrun problems... then i got a scsi plextor 8meg cache and that r0xed until IDE caught up with cd-r's.

re: Old drives

Back in the day, the really "hot" deal from AT was the Imation 8X SCSI burner, which was in all actuality a rebadged Plextor SCSI drive. Coupled with a SCSI source drive, "on the fly" was possible ...

Sorry for bumping an old post... but does anybody know the difference between the 3 SH-203B models listed via the OP's link?

There appear to be 3, one is $24.99, another $25.99, and a third for $29.99. Not sure what the differences are though.

The main differences are between Lightscribe, SATA, and IDE. The SH-S203N is a Lightscribe SATA drive (also comes with Samsung branded Nero Express 7,) and therefore is most expensive.

I bought the SH-S203N last week, and can't rave about it enough. The tray is incredibly well-designed, and the drive itself is very quiet. Burns through every type of media with ease, and reads everything thrown at it. Highly recommended.

Actually, there are 3 different models all with the "SH-203B" (with the B) ID via that link in the OP's post. I'll link them all 3 separately.

Oops, there were 3 last night, now there are just 2 -

http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16827151166 - @ $24.99

http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16827151153 - @ $29.99

Both of these are SH-S203B's, but one has the addition of the "BEBN" code and is $5 less.

Sorry, I totally misread your question by not reading carefully enough. I just noticed the amount of identical Samsung DVD writer models with varying prices. Perhaps the price difference are for those drives that include the Samsung OEM software package. Good question.
