I just bought this monitor and before buying it, I couldn't really find a lot of information on it. In particular, I couldn't find anyone who bought it after using an IPS monitor for a long time, which was my case.
So, here are my thoughts on using the Samsung s23a950d, after having used an e-IPS display for over a year.
I had been using the NEC ea231wmi, which is a 23 inch E-IPS display with a strong anti-glare coating. It had reviewed pretty darn well and I have used it for about 18 months. I really enjoyed using this monitor, however, after getting back into gaming I wasn't satisfied with the response time. Plus, I've heard great things about the 120hz feature when gaming.
I was scared to try a TN display, after using IPS. Particularly because I had originally experienced an IPS display while using a 27in iMac for over a year. I loved it. After I switched back to using a Windows PC, I first tried an Asus 27in TN display and was absolutely HORRIFIED at the poor quality, so I quickly bought the NEC EA23 with e-IPS display. I wasn't big on the anti-glare coating, but the display was beautiful.
So, after that experience, I decided to take another chance and try the Samsung monitor.
I am not disappointed.
1: I prefer the glossy display over matte when gaming and watching videos. This particular glossy display doesn't seem to reflect as much as my old iMac, but I might be mistaken. This is just preference, anyhow.
2: The viewing angle was initially poor, HOWEVER, after enabling the MagicAngle feature ... I'm amazed. It's damn nearly as good as my previous e-IPS display. No longer do colors shift when just tilting my head up and down naturally. If you're coming from an IPS display, you really shouldn't worry about viewing angles. I'm truly impressed and surprised.
3: I can't comment on color accuracy because I don't do print work. So far, I'm very pleased with the colors, they're rich but not overly saturated.
4: The 120hz feature worked well out of the box and it has made Battlefield 3 feel like a different game. I love it. (I have 570s in SLI, I recommend you have that or better so that you can actually push past 60 fps, toward 120 fps, in Ultra.)
5: The general look and feel of the monitor is superb. The build quality is nice, but it doesn't feel as well built as an Apple display. It has aluminum but it also has plenty of plastic and so it feels nice, but just not Apple display/iMac nice.
That's all for now. Let me know if you have any questions and I'll try to get to them. I don't have a lot of time to run formal tests, etc, but I just wanted to give my thoughts on this monitor.
