I'm thinking about getting 2x 512MB Samsung PC2100 Sodimms for my laptop. They are relativly cheap $145 for both sticks shipped. But I've never really heard anything about them.

Are they any good? Or should I stick w/ crucial/corsair? They will be going into my IBM Thinkpad X31.

Samsung is an excellent brand, but I think you are paying way too much.
You can get 256MB PC2100 much cheaper, heck for $199 you can get a single 512MB stick from IBM which would be the best option for that X31.

edit: sorry, i mistook 2x512 for 2x256MB :)

I have heard about problems with 512MB crucial modules and T40's.

um these are 2 sticks of 512MB pc2100 sodimms.

So that breaks down to $72.5 shipped for each 512MB stick.

256MB PC2100 is about $40 per stick

i've read that too, it seems it was a bad batch and crucial replaced them and now they work fine. The ram i'm getting is so cheap I wonder if I should just go for it. I know samsung is agreat company I have a 191T. But I've never heard anything about their ram.

Samsung makes a lot of RAM chips, the other companies use their chips to build modules and sell them.
But, yes you are getting an awesome price, i would just get the Crucial memory. (assuming they really did fix those compatibility problems with the Thinkpads.)

I think my T40p came with 1 x 512MB and it was Infineon chips in BGA packaging.

did you get the real samsung memory or a memory with samsung chipset? I remember back a year ago, Samsung original was expensive. that was the only memory that IBM used. I bought 512 mb for $145 each at that time.

also, the memory that compatible with my IBM a31p was only original samsung. if you get the original samsung with that price then you get the best deal ever.

I believe they came out of a Dell laptop, so hopefully samsung original. But if they don't work I got it from a trader with very good feedback so I'm sure I can get my money back.
