I got a good deal on a flat screen Samsung plasma tv. From day one if an image displayed for longer than one minute it would burn in. The burn in was never permanent but it persisted for a couple minutes (longer if the burn-in was black or white text). I thought this was a facet of the tv being plasma but then I spoke to three other people who have the same exact tv (well, theirs are a little bigger) and don't have the burn-in problem. Is this a defect with the tv or is it normal?

What you are experiencing is image retention (IR), not burn-in; however the 2 can look very similar. Samsung plasmas are the worst when it comes to IR. You can reduce the effects though by turning down your contrast/brightness. If you have it in full dynamic mode, your IR will be more severe. Turning it down will most likely not eliminate it, but it can reduce the effects where it doesn't bother you as much.

If you're getting IR after only a minute or so then your TV is defective. It should take hours to generate IR not minutes.

I've had a Samsung plasma for about 3 1/2 years and I still get IR. Mine seemed to get IR at the drop of a hat. It was a matter of minutes and still is. The NFL draft scared the hell outta me that first year cuz the draft ticker was on the left side of the screen for like four hours solid. The IR was pretty bad, but it wasn't permanent. It's the only plasma I've ever owned, but I did follow a few break-in procedures for the first 250 hours or so:

1- Turned the cell light down to 6 or less and the brightness less than 8

2- Run a burn-in DVD every week for about 6-8 hours.

3- Made sure the picture was on stretch mode for any 4:3 programs

I still get the ESPN ticker and other similar static images that will be stubborn after 20 minutes or so, but they go away after a few minutes of normal TV. It will get a LOT better as it ages.

so it seems that IR comes with the territory with plasma tvs? that stinks.

I have a burn-in utility that comes with the tv, but that just solves the symptom not the cause, so I've had to run it pretty often when I'm watching tv or playing video games.

Do LCD tvs have the same problem with IR?

Stop using the burn-in utility!!!

I assume that the utility flashes a white image on the screen. Using this repeatedly will age your screen much faster. Never use it for IR. It's debatable whether to use it for actual burn-in.

LCDs can have something similar to IR, but it doesn't seem as prevalent as plasmas. IR varies with different plasmas. I have a Pioneer 5080, and IR is almost not noticeable. If it switches from a static image to a black screen, then I can see a little bit of IR for a couple seconds, but that very rarely happens.

Edit: I added very rarely, because I only see IR about twice every year for less than 3 seconds each time.

My 4 year old Panasonic plasma takes hours for IR to occur and when it does it goes away quite fast. No pixel orbiter or screen wiper or anything.

Oh and I "broke it in" by watching TV on it.

My 4-5yr panasonic plasma is the same. It will get a little bit of image retention after 45min or so that you can only see on a black screen and pretty much only if you're looking for it. Switch channels/play a different game, and it's 95% gone in 5 seconds, completely in distinguishable in 30 seconds.

none of that super fancy shit they have nowadays. I guess it helps that panasonic was the second best next to the Kuros.
