Pretty cool! That's just over a foot...basically the same depth as my 17" CRT.

Edit: Wow! Just looked up the specs for my monitor, and it's apparently 42cm deep. 35 is very very impressive for a 32" CRT TV. :Q

That is pretty sweet. Would make for a nice alternative to LCDs and Plasma.

Check out that contrast ratio, 5000:1.

While it is certainly nice and very cool, I think there would be two problems with this. It would still be too thick compared to the alternatives (LCD, plasma, OLED if it ever gets here) and it will likely be as expensive (even though it probably shouldn't be).

Competition is a good thing though, and if they can keep CRT competing with the newer stuff then it'll only force them to make more improvements.

I like what I read here out of that artical:

Next Target: 20cm Depth

Samsung SDI is not merely hoping to outdistance the competition in the 20- to 30-inch CRT market: the real goal is to make a CRT TV that can go head-to-head with LCD TVs in the global market. A source at the firm explained, "We developed this thin CRT with the objective of halting the erosion of the CRT TV market by LCD TVs."

In pursuit of this goal, the company has already started development of an even thinner CRT, with a depth of only 20cm. Sources at the firm believe it will be able to enter volume production around the end of 2006 through early 2007, and commented, "We are approaching it from two angles: extending the technology used in the 35cm CRT, and developing entirely new technologies."

One CRT engineer at a Japanese TV manufacturer pointed out, "A key issue for the 35cm CRT will be how it is utilized to improve product attractiveness versus thin-screen and conventional CRT TVs. It may be thinner than conventional TVs, but it's still deeper and heavier than the thin-screen models." Still, this is only the first release in Samsung SDI's project, which is working to achieve both thinner and lighter designs.

NICE! I would buy one right now if they were available. Especially if its released in a 16x9 format.

Since they're positioning this to compete with LCD TVs, you can rest assured that these thin CRTs will be similarly expensive.

But is it 2 much 2 hope that conventional CRT prices will fall as a result- i really want a 21-22' flat CRT, but its hard enuff finding someone who stocks them in Perth (WA), let alone at a reasonable price :(

EDIT: I really couldn't care less how long the tube is- i turn my desk longways as it is with my 17' cos it allows me to find a comfortable keyboard setup for gaming

Samsung is on fire in the past years. Definitely not the same company from ten years back.

FishTankX, while this product (prototype?) is mentioned as a TV, I would not be surprised if it offered PC resolutions as many display manufacturers are moving over to produce HDTV compatiable sets.

Anyone know the resolution on these things? I could have sworn to god I read an article a couple of months back which stated that the first gen would be 1080i/720P and the second gen would be 1080P

If it were 1080p, I'd be all over that.

Hell, even 720p might make me want to buy one.

I haven't heard of that particular one, but I suppose you're right. :p

I'm just fantasizing about the day I can use one of these reasonably large HDTV's and have it double as a monitor for my computer. :D

Edit: And afford one too.

If they keep their prices lower than LCDs, I'll be all over these.

If not, meh.
