Finally, Samsung's hybrid camera is on the horizon. I have high hopes for upcoming Samsung cameras for two reasons:

1. It's 35mm 1.5x hybrid camera.
(I never liked FourThirds much due to their sensor size being too small).

2. It's Samsung.
Samsung is a giant cooperation that has all the technologies and resources to make cameras in-house. This will be a big benefit for Samsung and they're quite ambitious in this market. They even went ahead, made a plan to merge Samsung Electronics and Imaging Solution branch for better preparation.
Though they failed miserably in automobile and Audio market, they have made amazing success stories in most of markets where they stepped foot in.

For now, the biggest problem for Samsung seems to be their lack of optics knowledge. However, as they're the biggest stockholder of Schneider Optics, I guess we could expect what Sony is doing with Zeiss.

Anyway, it'll be quite interesting to see how they'll play this game. I mean, it's not this rather small Samsung Imaging Solutions anymore, it's this huge Samsung Electronics that is coming on the way.

UPDATE: Possible specs.

30 fps or 7fps for 30 sec.
720P movie mode
369g weight
3" 92K pixels AMOLED screen
11 AF points
100% 92K EVF
0.2 sec. AF speed (Olympus Pen 0.6 sec, Panasoic GF being 0.3 sec.)
ISO 100~3200
12 Scene Mode
9 color picture styles
AF assist light
+
30mm 2.0 pancake lens

Good to see it's not going to be vaporware. However, I wonder if it isn't too late to get into the game as a new player. The last thing people want is another lens mount. Samsung will be going this alone, unless Pentax continues their relationship. And there are presumably no legacy lenses compatible. m4/3's has more or less the entire 4/3's lens catalog, plus all the new m4/3's offerings, and is supported by multiple manufacturers. The m4/3 bodies are excellent (I love my GF1), and the downsides to the sensor are not that huge, especially for a camera that will likely be used as a P&S replacement for those that already have a DSLR system and understand the limitations that go along with the small form factor.

With that said, as an owner of Full-frame, APS-C, and m4/3's bodies, I'm going to keep an eye on this.

Agreed. However,
I thought Samsung has no chance in dslr market but in hybrid market, I think they do. I don't think nowadays serious photographers are going to fall for Samsung because, after all, it's Samsung: as seen in cases of Sony. But, more soccer-moms and average-Joes are stepping up to the entry level dslr markets and this is the area Samsung's hybrid could shine. When Samsung first entered digital camera market not so long ago, it was predicted they'd fail but now they rank third after Canon and Sony. Now that it'll be much bigger Samsung Electronics playing the game, the king of resources in terms of marketing, technical, financial, human, international network...etc. I think the possibilites are limitless. Again, Samsung is known for their aggressiveness. I hope they keep that culture in this market as well.

Samsung is trying to do everything under the sun. I wouldn't buy anything from a company like that. They're too stretched.

CES?

NASA

so it knows NASA is an acronym but not CES?

apparently if you edit enough it'll let you ALL CAPS

I THINK ADAPTING LENSES IS A BIT EASIER WITH THE 1.5 CROP

caps theory confirmed

My guess is you already own many things that are at least in part manufactured by Samsung.

Like memory or LCDs? Perhaps. But those are what made them. But mine are manufactured by someone else. Expanding so aggressively makes me keep a weary eye on them. I have nothing branded by Samsung because I've heard horror stories about their customer service/warranties/reliabilities.

assuming their sensor is improved over what's in the K7 (the K7's biggest weakness is the sensor imho), could be interesting. though i'd rather have a more modular system with grips and viewfinders as accessories.

i wonder if sony has anything up their sleeves on this front?

i wish they would make an adapter to adapt K/m42 mount lenses, now that would rock. Also they need to make something smaller like the pen , imagine using the lovely pentax pancakes with a smaller nx series.
