samsung monitor/tv

I am looking to buy a monitor for my computer (currently building) and was dead set on the 2405 FPW, but then I came accross this Samsung.

I will have 2 x 7800 GTX in SLi, X2 4400+, etc, so I should be able to handle this, right? I am in the Army, so space in the barraks is at a premium and I want to be able to use my monitor for watching HDTV, but I can't sacrifice performance in the monitor department as I do a lot of gaming. In short, I need a monitor that can handle high end graphics AND HDTV cable.

Thanks in advance for advice and opinions.

Also, I want to take into consideration the future. Isn't HDTV and the new DVDs supposed to copyright protected? HDCP I think? The 2405 is capable of running hi def resolutions, but this samsung is "HD Ready." That should get rid of any issues concerning this new copyright stuff right?

Potential Problems with the Samsung

#1. No where does it say the Samsung has a HDCP input either in HDMI (preferred) or DVI (need a dongle to convert HDMI to) form. Unless the monitor has an HDCP input port, then currently neither Blu-ray or HD-DVD will play at resolutions about 480p (standard DVD) and may not play at all.

#2. Ergonomically, the system has very little in adjustment room. You mention cramped living spaces so potentially you can find the "perfect" spot for this monitor, but the ability to raise, lower, swivel and pivot are certainly benifical.

#3. Still only "HD-Ready". This is a fancy term for BYOT or Bring your own tuner. The monitor can display HD content, but won't unless you are feeding the info in on a seperate tuner. These days a decent ATSC (Over the Air HD tuner) runs around 100.

#4. (personal pref.) The Samsung looks like it has speakers attached. This is bad because in most situations for PC or Home Theater use, you will want to use a true surrond sound setup. This makes these speakers essentially useless, but they take up space, cost more, and make the unit both heavier and potentially draw more power.

At ~1600 or close to twice the cost of a Dell 2405 on special its hard to recommend that monitor unless it has better IQ and HDCP...

Thanks for the reply. After looking a little closer, I pretty much decided the same thing. Not to mention, the dell just went on sale today $959.00. It just doesn't feel like a good buy on the Samsung to me.

You might want to wait just a bit longer...

Gateway just released a 21" widescreen with HDCP ins

Although a little small and not 1080p capable (1680 x 1050), I believe other monitor makes will have to follow suite soon with HDCP support.

HDCP support is needed for a monitor to be "Vista-Ready"
