After poking around a bit, it looks like the drive has 3 platters, is a low-energy-use model, runs cool, and is virtually silent. Being a 5400 RPM model, it likely won't have the fastest data transfers, but at the same time, it will likely prove to be less prone to failure than a faster-spinning drive (at least that's the impression i've gotten about the slower-spinning drives). At $119 shipped, i doubt the price will dive so much more that it will prove worthwhile to have waited.

It seems like a good deal.

Call me crazy... but I'd pay 5$ more for a slower 5400rpm version of the F1 for my HTPC. Less noise and vibrations, less heat... probably longer life expectancy. And in all seriousness, the performance of 333GB/platter @ 5400rpm probably exceeds the 6.5 MB/s requirement to play 1080p movies by an order of magnitude.

I think this is perfect for those looking for HTPC storage. I ordered one of these last night.

tempting. there seems to be a $5 off $100 coupon floating around too, making it $85. included esata bridge should go well with a desktop! I don't know much about cavalry's rebates, how reliable are they?

I am not in a "huge" rush to get more space, I already filled 1.5tb with mostly backups of dvd and a few songs.

I saw a RAID 1 1TB WD My Book something or other. Obviously there were two 1TB drives inside and it was for like $150 or something. I almost bought it figuring there is no reason why you cannot take apart these "external drives" and make them "internal"

Damn, wish I saw this a week ago. I ordered a 500 GB harddrive for $80.... this is double the size, with much better connections for only $10 more. :( Oh well. I still like to think I got a good deal.

No regrets on computer parts. If you do any price shopping before making a purchase, you did your homework. Pricing is crazy on this stuff.

"I remember paying $100 for a 1gig compact flash drive, that was a hot deal for a week"

Only lesson I have learned is to wait and keep checking the boards if you don't really "need" something immediately.

Yeah. I've bought 3 parts for my new build so far just through hot deals. Waiting for more. :D

WOW...

Kinda makes me sad, but that reminds me when I bought 3 60gig HDs for $900 dollars. Now, we're talking about 1TB HD for $120 and it's not even considered a hot deal... just normal pricing.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but looking at the specs for this drive (Samsung 1TB 5400rpm) and the Western Digital 1TB GP, the GP still consumes less power.

the F1 is pretty much one of the quietest drives out there.

i think its as quiet as the greenpower according to silentpcreview. i have a 750gb one and its pretty quiet.
