While new cartridges are rather pricy @ ~$80, I've successfully refilled a cartridge two times with no significant change in quality...at least to my eye (mostly teXt - few images). The refills on E-bay are around 5 bucks.

Printer is a real workhorse.

GO FOR IT!!!

It's in the fine print at the bottom of the page.

"Consumable Yeild 3,000 Pages at IDC 5% Coverage (Ships with 1,000 pages Starter Toner Cartridge)"

Use google to search for cartridge prices. You may want to consider generic, refilled and refill yourself cartridge options in addition to authentic/Samsung branded.

That's good to know. Some of the newer laser printer carts can be refilled but the transfer roller/drum built into the cart is made to only last one use so the print quality is degraded even after refilling with toner. Or, the printer goes into maintenance mode and stays in maintenance mode which makes the print light. I hate smart cartridges.

I use toner refills on several of my laser printers and it's easy to do. I get my refills from Tonerrefillkits.com and you don't need a special tool kit to refill the cart for this printer.

I have the 1710 and I bought my refills off of fleabay and have had no trouble and have filled it twice now. I do like the printer.

I checked the rebates and as far as I can tell you only get $80 if you buy a toner with it so you are not getting the printer for $39 but more likely $59.

Umm. There are TWO links for rebates -- one for $60, and one for $20. The funny thing is that both links point to the same form -- the $60 one.

I would not count on the 2nd $20 until I see the form myslef. Still a good deal, though.

Well if you look at friday's ad, they list two rebates, 60 and 20. Most likely outpost just linked the wrong rebate.

In the Best Buy ad that starts on Sunday they list 2 rebates also. I think that the link for the $20 rebate is wrong.

It says, "receive up to an $80 MIR". To get the $80 you need to also buy a cartridge. Otherwise it looks like it's $120-$60MIR=$60. Still a good deal.

Uh, NO. They represent the price "after rebate" as 39.99. Nowhere on that page does it say that you need to buy an additional item for that price to be 39.99 AR.

I agree with robertsmith.
But, sad to say, all I had done previously was to check that the rebates' pdf links had the same file name (4035092.pdf). I saved the files to disk without opening them.

I spoke with an Outpost order agent earlier this afternoon. I asked about the rebates having the same file name. He said , "How long has it been like that ? "

Me -Since at least Friday.
Outpost - We'll have to tell them to fix that. No changes would have been made during the weekend.

I ordered the printer. ( Due back in stock on 6-21-05. The agent said that both rebates _definitely_ would be valid based on the order, not the ship, date).

Open the pdf - IT IS ONLY ONE REBATE. To get the $80 rebate one must buy the printer AND a cartridge.

Quoting the rebate form -
"Purchase a Samsung ML-1740 Laser
Printer to qualify for a $60 mail-in
rebate, OR purchase a Samsung
ML-1740 Laser Printer AND a
Samsung ML1710D3 Toner Cartridge
to qualify for an $80 mail-in rebate. "

NOTHING on the Outpost-Samsung ML-1740 Laser Printer page says squat about a toner cartridge. Furthermore, the Outpost-Samsung ML-1740 Laser Printer page

http://shop2.outpost.com/product/4035092

shows the SINGLE rebate as two separate ( implying different, independent) rebates - one for $60 and ANOTHER for $20. They even have different rebate close dates. Hopefully someone at Outpost just linked to the same rebate in error. Buuuut, I don't think so.

If deliberate then this is clearly deceptive and misleading. Outpost USED to have a good reputation with me but if this type of shady marketing continues all that goodwill is gone, poof. I would rather pay more and deal with a company I have some faith in than one that is trying to trick its customers.

I will call tomorrow and cancel most likely. I imagine they won't notice or care much. Big companies are often like that - they figure plently of other suckers won't catch on or care.

Yes, the Samsung is probably a good printer. Yes, the price is good regardless. But I have a fine Minolta 1250W I got over a year ago for $70 locally at Staples (which I probably found out about in this most excellent forum). This Samsung was to be late Father's Day gift.

So, Outpost, I hope you will make good. We'll see.

Thanks to the original poster. It looks like he got fooled too, however.

I have this printer and its awesome.

I got about 750 out of the starter cartridge. My replacement cartridge was $62 @ office depot after coupon.

This thing prints very fast and reliable. Ive had it for 2 years now and it still runs strong :)

You shouldn't have to cancel. You could call their CS line again and tell them that you will file complaints with your State Attorney's Office and the BBB if they don't make good on their advertised price.

Fry's Outpost has a very basic problem.

The customer service and order fulfillment apparently comes from CT, the location of the original Cyberian Outpost operation. They have always been helpful when I have called.

The web site is posted and controlled by people in CA.

Somehow, the correctness or accuracy of the web site is NOT important to the people on the left coast since they do not suffer directly from the customer calls and complaints. This is not a new thing. It has been going on for a long time. And companies wonder why there seems to be less customer loyalty!

If the web group in CA was under contract to the group in CT, they would have been let go a long time ago. Since they have Fry Corporate protection, the folks in CT are stuck with them and their poor web service.

This is just my observation from my experience. Feel free to disagree.

After shipping, and after rebate, it will be ~$75. These are going for about that price (more like $80 shipped) on eBay "buy it now" -- for those that don't want to mess with a big rebate.

eBay would be problematic for warranty service, of course.

Newegg has the same printer for $80 AR, shipped. I'd personally pay $5 extra to deal with Newegg, particularly as they will have it in stock and ship same-day.

As far as I can tell, this is the only low-end printer that allows easy toner refills. The Brother, Minolta, and Lexmark all have chips in the cartridges. The HP can be refilled, but it is a bit higher in price.

Thanks for the helpful comments.

Called Outpost Monday. CS (yes, in CT) emailed me the correct $20 rebate. He was pleasant and helpful but I think underneath he was just as pist as me (I ?) since he takes the complaints for others' screwups.
He did inform me that the ship date is the critical one for rebate qualification since Outpost will not bill my cc until the item ships. When I placed the order yesterday the agent had said the order date was controlling - which I wanted to believe that since the printer is OOS with ETA on 6-21-05.
The $20 "bonus rebate" is also from Samsung and does expire on 6-23. Stay tuned. :)

Now I wonder if I'm doing my Dad a favor or not considering statements here about toner cost. But a 1000 page starter and two (1000 page) refills that's a lot of reams.

What did the porn starlet say about her male lead ?

that's a lot of reams

The refills should be "full" refills and give you 3000 pages each. The starter toner cartridge isn't smaller sized, it's just 1/3 full.

They still have not corrected it, even they have known for more than 2 days now. Apparently quite a few people are waiting...

Is this printer PCL based or Host based. Outpost says it is compatible with PCL 6 but reviews I am reading is saying it is host based. Anyone have any ideas?

My friend had the same problem. He told me he filed a complaint with the BBB and CT's Attorney General's office. Hold'em accountable...
