Samsung Laser Printers - 3rd Party Toner/Refill compatible?

Hey all,

I just purchased a CLP-500 Color Laserjet and found out that out of all the comparible printers (HP 1500L, Minolta 2300) it seems to have the highest consumable costs.

I was wondering if Samsung printers have any chipkill technology on their printers and/or toner cartridges which will prevent the user from refilling a used cartridge or using a 3rd party toner cart replacement.

Even though it seems to be a very nice printer for the price ($300), if Samsung is trying to pull the crap that Lexmark is with "you can only use our branded toner & ink carts," I may have to return this bad boy. 🙁

The Samsung consumables are not really more expensive.

A quick compare on CompUSA between the Minolta and the Samsung yields:

(Their are much cheaper prices online for both, but this gives an indication of relative price).

Minolta 2300 Toner - Black = $84.99 for 4500 pages = 1.88 cent per page
Minolta 2300 Toner - Magenta = $69.99 for 1500 pages = 4.66 cents per page

Samsung CLP-500D7K - Black = $99.99 for 7000 pages = 1.42 cents per page
Samsung CLP-500D5M - Magenta = $119.99 for 5000 pages = 2.38 cents per page

So even though the Samsung unit prices are more expensive, they print much more so the per-page cost is higher.

Cost of replacement...

Black on web sites such as provantage.com black is down to 79.90, all the colors are less than 100 but if i go to my local store and get one its $99 and $120 for each color, and if i shop around i can prob beat that too... even after shipping (some sites give free shipping) and no sales tax.... it makes a big difference in the cost you calculate.
