Samsung iPod Killer?

Has anyone seen a Samsung YH-925GS in the flesh, so to speak?

http://product.samsung.com/cgi-bin/nabc...tail.jsp?eUser=&prod_id=YH-925GS%2fXAA

I converted the dimensions from MM to inches and it's almost exactly the same size as an iPod 20 GB. The YH, though, has a color screen and photo capabilities. And the price tag seems to be (shopper.com) $269.

This seems pretty interesting, perhaps there is finally a real contender against the iPod. Also notice that Samsung has a color iPod mini-sized Yepp with a 5GB drive and a color screen.

Looks cool, for sure.

With that said, I doubt it'll be an iPod killer, for the sole reason of it not being named an iPod...

Haha, good point. That being said, what about the machine itself? I can't seem to find any reviews on it (it seems to be new). I would like to know if it's any good, as I'm definitely in the market for an mp3 player.

wow looks pretty smooth and i read yesterday that apple were going to release a 5gb ipod mini with colour screens to compete with newer products... im guessing that's the Yepp.. i like to see competition because it makes for better products and prices :)

The iPod "Killer" is Apple itself. I have a feeling that the iPod will do really well for another year until Apple pulls some sort of stupid stunt, like they always do, and ruin what was once a great product.

the reason it wont be an ipod killer is the name appeal of ipod.
a classmate had the ipod shuffle and i said perhaps it was not the best purchase and she just replied "well i'm not paying 300 dollars more for the bigger ipods". I kinda had to blink and then replied "I didn't mean that you could have gotten a better value per space.. just that you could have gotten a better flash mp3 player with perhaps a screen? some more advanced features at the same price range?". She then replied "Ipod is the best, why would i want something else?"

So long as people with 500 bucks and no knowledge of tech are allowed to buy mp3 players.... ugh :p

Samsung makes nice stuff. The problem with their MP3 players is that they have been overpriced. They had the list price on their older 20 Gig model (YH-920GS) at $50 more than the equivelant iPod for the longest time.

This looks good to me. I am trying to replace my old Archos Jukebox Multimedia and this seems to fit the bill. Using my Axim X30 with a 1gb card is just not the same as a real MP3 player. I may have to try and sell the wife on this one...

10 battery means it sucks. IMO.
It should be more like 15 at least. I love my iRiver, partly because of the long battery life (H140).

My friend owns a YH-920GS, it is a royal POS. its OS is about as stable as windows ME, and you have to sign up for a napster account and use their very Unintuitive program to transfer music. The device has complained about "corrupt firmware" several times, and music seems to randomly appear and dissapear off the player.

The iPod name has become synonymous with MP3 players. Just as a Walkman used to be the player to have, the iPod has taken its place in the digital music era. I have yet to buy one, but once they put some wireless technology in it I'm game.

Apple may have the brand name, but if somebody walks into a BestBuy and notices that this Samsung has photo capabilities at about half the price of the iPod Photo, they may start to pay attention regardless of TV ads.

Also, it really does seem like Samsung has gotten serious about their mp3 players. Their older ones were crap, but these new models really seem nice.

Half the price of an ipod photo? Not quite, plus there are no 20GB ipod photos.

However, companies like Samsung, iRiver, and Dell don't really need to improve their mp3 players if they want to increase their market share. They just need to get other companies to start producing more accessories for their players, as that is one of Apple's biggest advantages as of now. Dell is probably the closest, but there is still a lot of work that needs to be done. Hell, I would have purchased an iRiver or Samsung if they had car playback kits allowing complete control via the car's stereo (not just auxillery input).

I bought one. It is pretty and has a nice interface. But, the thing is slow as hell, you press select and it takes three seconds for it do anything. Also the ten hour battery life is more like 6. I returned mine.
