My understanding is if you are synced with google accounts then yes you can.

Is this a sprint serviced Intercept or VM ?

guess i don't understand why they would remove the "groups" option from contacts. was convenient to get to people without having to scroll through 100+ names.

This is Android, though -- you can download a replacement/enhanced contacts app from the Market. I haven't tried any, mind you -- the Touchwiz one that's on other Samsungs is actually way nicer than stock Android.

(Downside: this is part of why no US carrier Galaxy Ses have gotten official Froyo.)

well when they took out the "groups" it deleted every contact i had in those groups. surely that was not the intent.

Contacts saved to your Gmail account are on the Google server so cannot be lost.
First of all check in Contacts > Menu > Contacts to display that you have selected your Gmail (or All)
If selected, turn phone off, remove battery and turn back on.
You will need a data connection to resend contacts.
However, if you have only saved contacts to android phone, it is possible to wipe them. But again, try turning phone on and off.
