http://www.engadget.com/2011/01/05/...ounced-for-atandt-4-5-inch-super-amoled-plus/

First introduced just last year on the Wave, it feels like Super AMOLED was just starting to get its sea legs... but here we go again: Samsung's latest handset -- announced today in collaboration with AT&T at CES -- is the first to tout "Super AMOLED Plus" technology that features a 50 percent boost in sub-pixel count, promising improvements both in contrast and outdoor readability. Maybe more importantly, the display clocks in at a whopping 4.5 inches, besting HTC's 4.3-inch range (the EVO 4G, Desire HD, and likely the Thunderbolt) without getting dangerously close to Dell Streak territory. It's got an 8 megapixel camera on back paired with a 1.3 megapixel shooter up front, a 1.2GHz single-core Hummingbird processor, and still somehow promises to be the thinnest smartphone on AT&T when it launches at a to-be-determined date. Now, the controversy: despite the name, the Infuse 4G apparently doesn't have a hint of LTE -- it's HSPA+, which means AT&T's now playing the same game as T-Mobile.

We've had a brief chance to play with an early Infuse 4G dummy unit, so we weren't able to turn it on, but we got a pretty good impression of how it feels. Basically, we came away encouraged that 4.5 inches isn't going to feel too big for practical use -- if you're accustomed to something like an EVO, you probably won't skip a beat (that's undoubtedly due in part to the fact that the Infuse seems to be quite a bit thinner). We're told the tastefully textured matte rear cover that we saw wasn't final, but we're crossing our fingers that the retail unit doesn't diverge far from what they've done here, because it felt exceptionally high-quality and looked a whole lot better than the typical glossy plastic on the existing Galaxy S series. Speaking of Galaxy S, the Infuse is described as "a Galaxy S phone" -- so yeah, that brand isn't going away any time soon. Software-wise, we obviously weren't able to get a feel for speed on the non-functional model, but you can expect the usual TouchWiz skin atop Android 2.2; sure, Gingerbread would've been nice at launch, but you can dry your tears on that 1.2GHz silicon.

Despite the fact that I'm disappointed by the non existent froyo upgrade for the Galaxy S phones I still want it.

In 8 months, you'll be complaining about the non existent Gingerbread upgrade for your Infuse while all your buddies with HTC or Moto phones will be sporting Honeycomb. :p

lol, Probably.

Although Moto is even worse than Samsung when it comes to their non Droid phones.

The screen! I don't care if the battery lasts 10 minutes, this is awesome.

Also, it's basically another Galaxy S, which is good for development. (Once AOSP driver issues are solved -- likely this month -- Samsung updates become irrelevant.) Note that the current line has 1.2ghz settings in the kernel code, just commented out.

In other words, this should have been the Nexus S/Shove in a Tegra 2 in there and call it a Nexus S.

I'm impressed with parts of this, but 4.5" = huge meh for me. The HD2 was already bigger than I want.

You don't have to buy it. AT&T is just trying to flesh out their smartphone options for when they lose their iPhone exclusivity.

Clearly I don't. Just voicing my opinion. Believe it or not, me saying I don't like an Android product doesn't have to be a dagger through your heart.

You can't support every phone forever.

True enough, but when the push out 2.2 to a nearly identical phone, it leaves people scratching their heads. Planned obsolescence or just plain laziness? Moto's been good about updates on their Verizon Droid branded devices, but lackluster at best on other devices.

This phone will be a huge hit based in large part to screen size/quality, mark my words.

Hummingbird by now must have the weakest CPU of all the contenders in the party, seriously scrolling through webpages will be a slideshow if it has the same cpu as the vibrant, i did oc mine to 1.4 and the experience wasn't that pleasant. I can only imagine how bad will look in a bigger screen.
Seriously lose that hummingbird crap and bring some orion goodness.

Lol wut? If scrolling through webpages was a slideshow on a 1.4ghz hummingbird your phone had some other serious problems. My fascinate is awesomely smooth at stock clocks. You act like the Hummingbird isn't the fastest soc you can buy right now in a phone.

^this

It's definitely the phone my parents (whose idea of a portable game is sudoku) will (and should) want.

Depends if he's on 2.2 or not. Google screwed up browsing for Hummingbird for 2.2. They changed some stuff to speed up Snapdragon browsing and that messed up Hummingbird. It was fixed in 2.2.1 but only i9000 have that leak.

2.1 web browsing was blazing fast. Faster than iP4, iPad, any other Android phones. 2.2 is dog slow and now slower than all the same devices. 2.2.1 is again the fastest. Most of us are on leaked 2.2 so our web browsing is slow and laggy with flash turned off or set to on demand.

All I want to know is if it will have higher resolution along with the bigger screen.
4.5" in a small thin no bezel frame is nice but if its still sporting 800x480, then I'm disappointed.

If this is the case, I'm surprised more Vibrant ROMs aren't using what the Captivate folks call "reorient" kernels: i9000 2.2.1 modded to account for the hardware differences of the target device (for the Cap this includes everything being turned 90 degrees). All but like two of the current Captivate Froyos are based on this.
