Something like that wouldn't be until the late spring early summer minimum since Samsung has their hands full with the Nexus S right now.

If it came out right now it would be $400+ on contract with those specs. Next summer at the earliest.

what do you want? a brick in your pocket?

Would the DROID be a brick?

The fact is the Fascinate feels like a plastic phone. Not only that it feels empty and hollow. Pressing on it hard and you feel like it bends. Does this happen with the iPhone 4? I haven't really tried snapping it in half, but when you try to bend it, it feels solid. Very solid. At 137g it's only slightly heavier than a Nexus One, and still over 20g lighter than a Droid.

All I'm asking for is decent build quality which the Galaxy S phones already lack.

Droid is a brick. iphone4 is a brick. Just because you've been conditioned to think brick phone=quality doesn't mean it's true. Do you have some evidence of large number of galaxy s phones cracking and breaking due to the use of plastic? Samsung made the design decision to go lightweight and it's refreshing to see light weight phone in a sea of bricks. Samsung used the lightness and thinness of s-amoled to its advantage. Maybe other companies can't make a light phone.

If you want a brick phone, you have ample selection. Just move on. Some of us want a light phone with beautiful hardware. We like the plastic. It's not like Samsung used plastic to save cost given they spared no expense stacking this phone with top of the line hardware.

Drop an iPhone 4 and a Galaxy S on the ground. Which one breaks?

"Feels" like quality != quality.

There are plenty of reports of Gorilla Glass Galaxy S' shattering on the ground from a drop too. Same with Droids. The point is these iPhone drops were talks about glass shattering upon dropping on concrete. There might be some other cases too, but given how glass works, I don't think a drop is something ANYONE wants on their phone.

Do you have any basis to say the iPhone 4 breaks more than the Galaxy S in a regular drop test? Or are you saying that because people on this board love to harp about any negativity about the iPhone 4?

I mean after all, if build quality doesn't matter, we can have cardboard phones too. Would that work? Sure opinion matters, but I'm just saying that there's some positives about build quality, and that I would like good build quality. Light vs Heavy is a total different story. Carbon fiber for example has excellent strength while being lightweight. The plastic for the SGS phones feel cheaper and the phone feels less solid than their HTC counterparts.

Galaxy S phones do not have Gorilla Glass. Their screen is actually much thinner than any other phone because of the SAMOLED design.

iPhone 4's have been breaking when inserted into 3g/gs cases, I know that much. Not heard anything about any other phone by any manufacturer than has a breakage issue like that.

Very well said. While I do like the feel of a "brick", the Galaxy S has a plastic housing but also feels strong to me.

A brick doesn't mean high quality, and lightweight doesn't necessarily mean cheap. Holding a Droid 1 feels solid and sturdy. Holding a Vibrant or Fascinate feels like cheap plastic. You get the impression that you could fold them in half with just two fingers. Could easily be remedied using an aluminum unibody design, something that's easy enough to do.

Okay so you put a thinner phone in an old case and expect it not to break?

You know how Moto released the extended BP7X battery that's 1800maH designed for the DROID1/2? They give you a new battery cover.

Read about the people on DroidForums who want to keep it compact and didn't put the larger battery cover and tried to bend the old one to fit? The clips for it would snap off or bend or warp or severely strain their phone. Good job. So yeah I haven't heard that about the iP4, but it's obvious if you're putting a 3GS case on it, you're doing it wrong. Curved backing vs flat backing.

Well yes that's my point. Not too hard to implement. There comes a point where thin and light are questionable. Like the iPod Touch 4G? It's so thin you can't hold well in your hand. Hell, this has been a problem since the 2G iPod Touch. They're quite thin you get a better grip by having a case on it. There's a point where going thinner will just impede on ergonomics. Same with going lighter. The 130g Nexus One is already quite light compared to the Droid or DroidX. Do we need to really go down to 115g?

Well from my personal experience, the samsung galaxy S is considered cheap because of the lighter built and the glossy finish, i have had the captivate, vibrant, and both are very solid phones, no flexing when you press the screen and the plastic is high grade.
The N1 or G2 are nice phones i'm currently using a G2, also but i rather have a plastic phone, as a drop can bend the metal and condition the phone's structural integrity. The plastic will just absorb the impact.

Again different taste for different people, i am not saying the GSG is a perfect design but is not like you having a fisher price. All HTC phones tend to be in the heavy side, i've called HTC to see how much is to fix a phone and they quote $150 for something like putting a new casing to a phone.

It is not fair calling out the SGS, i think most of the beef came from the N1 owners who had phone jealousy and started calling out on the SGS without handling the phone itself.

Anyone who's held a Moto Droid 1, Droid 2, Droid X, MT4G, or G2 is going to consider the Galaxy S phones very fisher price in comparison. They just feel cheap.

It's not that it's thinner, it's due to it being thicker at the edge than the G/GS. Still doesn't stop it from being an issue, either way round.

I don't agree.
The MT4G and G2 looks cheap to me.
The Captivate is the best looking Galaxy phone.
I still prefered the Vibrant aesthetically compared to the MT4G or G2.

Dude i have had the MT4G, and currently using the G2, the MT4G "looks" Cheap and like a fisher price toy with those childish colors and the "touch" along the "genius" button it does really degrade that phone into some teenager's wet dream for a cellphone. However the phone does not feel cheap in any way.
The G2 does look robust but the z hinge is just plain awkward and prone to breakage.

Cheap means that the plastic construction is not precise with crevices and flexing but you don't find any of that on the vibrant, if you look closely the construction is very precise in the ballpark of 1/100th of a inch but i guess there is no need to talk this further with you since you can't see beyond the color of the phone and the weight.
