Well, it's actually for my dad.... not much of it is dvd i would say... it would mostly be digital cable tv (probably 95%)

The thing is... me and him sat down and calculated after the stand and tv and everything this one would be exactly 2k the toshiba would be 2825. But there would be a an hdtuner inside do you think that's worth the money?

What's your viewing distance?

With an 8' viewing distance, the ideal screen size for a 16:9 diagonal picture is 71.6" according to THX. This is given awesome source quality. SMTPE (Dolby labs) recommends a MINIMUM of a 59" screen at this distance, again, holding source quality as a constant.

This being said, I think that with 95% of your source being digital cable, I'd be comfortable with recommending an ~50" TV from that distance. The lower the quality of your feed, the smaller your TV should be to compensate.

I would, however, suggest that you visit a local Best Buy or Circuit City to verify that this is a comfortable size for your viewing distance. Bring a tape measure. In general, you should measure out the distance, and then pick a TV size that feels just a tad bit TOO BIG. When you get a TV home, in time, in tends to "shrink" (in terms of how it feels in your viewing).

Anyhow, here are a few TV's you may want to consider:

$2163.47 shipped: Samsung HLP-5085W 50" DLP (uses HD2+ chip, which is better than the HD3 on the HLP-5063W, plus it comes with a built in stand):

$1799.06 shipped: Toshiba 52HM84 52" DLP (uses HD2+ chip as well):

$1895 shipped: Toshiba 52HM94 52" DLP (again, uses HD2+ plus has built in ATSC/QAM tuner):

There really is no ideal solution. You have to pick a budget, then try to find the best TV for you, for your viewing source, for your viewing conditions, for your preferences. :)

I would imagine that the delivery people who work for the distribution plant are more specialized. After all TVs are all they move.

Well received mine 2 days ago. WHen I went out to meet the delivery guy I was surprised to discover he had no help! Well we went to the back of the truck and I got a bit of a shock! My new Tv had no one, not two but three holes in the box!!! Now these weren't your pencil poke through the box either. These were two on the top that had to be from the forks of a fork truck.
The third hole on the bottom appeared to be from it being placed on a 2-3 inch pipe!! Well I looked at the driver and he said , "well I suppose you want to refuse it but let's open it up and look and see what shape it's in".
I cracked the top open and the top was ok! The forks had apparently peirced the box but not reached the set as it was hit from the back and the set slopes forward at the top.
We proceeded with the opening and I saw the styrofoam ( there are 3 on bottom) had taken all the pipe damage and was still protecting the bottom by about one inch.
I decided to completely open it and set it up. We plugged it in and ...it worked! You could have knocked me over with a feather!
The picture was fairly close to perfect right out of the box. I have tweaked it a little using various tip I got the avsforum.com and am really happy!
Lots of people there are unhappy to find out I got this tv for half of what it cost as recently as last year!
Don't know what the shipping channel used was or where the box go thurt just happy I got it in one piece and it looks great.

Thx for the hot deal just no more for awhile ok need to recover a bit from this one!!

Moving into an apartment in about a month and I keep referring back to this deal. It's eating at me... hehehe. Apex, thanks for all your information. I'm really digging that Samsung with the stand. Before you posted that link, I had been looking at the HLR5087W (http://www.buy.com/retail/product.asp?sku=201701315&loc=16234&sp=1). Is the only real difference the included tuner? Haven't had a chance to really read up on everything.

FYI, bulbs are NOT rated @ 3000 hours, currently have 7300 hrs on my Samsung DLP bulb, and counting. IMO, this was/is a fantastic deal.
