Samsung Hard Drives

I just bought a 160gig hard drive off NewEgg for 96 bucks shipped. It has a 3-year warranty which is what sold me on it. Has anyone ever had any problems with them? I don't know what to expect as far as problems but I'm hoping for minimal ones.

I've had 2 in my desktop for a year now, no problems.

They've gotten good reviews at SlientPCReview for being quiet and cool-running. They're a little slower than the fastest drives, but that doesn't make any real-world difference.

For what it's worth I'm using that same drive in my system. It's nice and quiet. I've got a temp probe taped to it and typically runs 35C. This is one of the drives Anandtech used in their mid-range system builder's guide back in September.

I have a spinpoint P80 120GB drive, it's fast, quiet, cool, can't complain at all. It's funny that no one recommends them when people ask about hard drives, but I think they are great.

I put a Samsung 120gb SATA drive in a computer I built for a friend this past summer. It's been 6 months now, and that machine has done great 🙂

I only tested the system for 2 or 3 days, but I do recall that it was even quieter than my Seagates! I really had to listen for it.

they only work great because not too many peeps use them, if everyone was using it excessively like maxtor or wd, there would be a mix of good and bad.
dont you say so? ...

i bought the same samsung sata drive oem and it didn't come with a data connector. it did come with the power->4pin molex though..

was it supposed to come with the data connector, and if not where can i get one?

I have the same drive and it's been fine, but I've only had it for about three months. I replaced a Seagate that died after 8 months so I need to put some miles on this one before I can compare it to the Maxtors I have. Lots of people have trouble with Maxtors, and maybe their quality has slipped recently, but over the years I've had 11 Maxtors and only one RMA.

Hmm 4 failures of the same piece of equipment is a lot. There is a chance you got 4 duds, but have you checked the rest of your system? Over or undervolting it could kill it, or something else. I'm not saying for sure that it's not the hard drive's fault, but to RMA 4 is really excessive.

I've recently gone with Seagate because of their 5 year warranties and their 'just as reliable as...' reputation.

If it can always be avoided, I'll never buy a 1yr warranty drive again, and a 5 year warranty is worth atleast 2x the $$ as the one year warranty drives, particularly since the quality is generally as good.

To buy a mega-large drive with a 1 year warranty is a waste of money imo, and scary that the manufacturer doesn't stand behind their drives further out than 12 months.
