I've owned 2 of their 30GB drives. One developed 1gb of bad sectors within a few months, the other got unbearably loud (rated at under 30db) after a month.

they aren't the fastest but they are supposed to be quiet and cool running
i think they also offer a 3 year warranty now

I have 2 in the system I built in December, cheap, quiet and working great so far.

My brother has 3 (OS + 2 in RAID-1) in a PC he built in July, also no problems.

I'm using one right now (the slim 40gb model). Its extremely quiet - even more so than a Barracuda 7200.7, which had very loud seeks. I can barely hear the seeks on the Samsung model. No problems here so far. I had to return the Seagate drive however, cause it kept making these strange grinding sounds every 30 seconds when left idle.

Wait a couple months and see if I was just extremely unlucky with my very loud drives (which had started out VERY quiet).

I own the same Samsung drive, it's very quiet, I can't hear it seeking inside my Sonata (everything else in my system is very quiet as well, pretty much inaudible in the day). I personally can't compare it to the current Seagate offerings, but the guys over at SilentPCReview that have used both all say the Samsung is quieter then the Seagate 7200.7's, and about the same noise level as the older, slower, and discontinued Barricuda IV's.

They aren't the fastest drives as already mentioned, but I'm not sure you'd really notice much of a difference between the current generation of 7200 rpm drives outside of benchmarks.

I've only had my drive for three months, but no problems (yet!).

weird, I have two segate disks, one does exactly that also, and the other one does it sometimes but not very loud like the other one

Are yours the same model as in the original post? Or just Samsung drives in general?
