Videocardz and TPU released news about Samsung's next gen memory.
GDDR7 should go up to 36gbps and be 25% more efficient thanks to PAM3, but If I think about It then It should still consume more power than 20gbps memory for example.

Where does a GPU live in a system?

Pcie slot.
And how does Pcie slot affect GDDR memory exactly? I don't see much of a connection there.
PCIe affects data transfer between CPU and GPU.
If there is not enough Vram, then GPU has to load data from main memory, but I don't think that was your point.

So, if you have a decrepit old system that only has PCIE 3 slots you wouldn't have the bandwidth to take advantage of the full 36GB/s the GDDR is capable of. If you had more than a single GPU that bumps it down to a X8/X8 configuration even on PCIE 4 you would not be able to take advantage of the full speed of the GPU.

VRAM to render and calculate.
I'm looking at things from end to end. If you don't have enough bus bandwidth there's going to be a bottleneck when moving it back tot he rest of the system.

Kind of like hooking up a SSD to a SATA II interface that's capable of 300MB/s and limiting yourself to 375MB/s vs the full potential of ~550MB/s.

Will it work? Sure. Will it be great? Maybe.

Sort of like when you add a 2nd GPU to a system that steps down the bus from x16 to x8/x8 due to limited CPU lanes.

It's OFFICIAL!

Unfortunately, I don't think we'll see this in RDNA4 and most of it is gonna get gobbled up by the AI freaks due to the RAS features anyway. Maybe Q4 2025 is when we see the first ever GDDR7 consumer product.
