I saw the Engadget review, and I mostly agree with them. Samsung's goal seems to be to aim for the lower end and soak up new customers. But, I think they would have been better off dropping the price on the Tab 7 Plus and pushing ICS out to it.

Someone needs to remind Samsung that the scatter approach doesn't work well. HTC ring a bell?

Keep one tablet at the 7in, 9in, and 10in points, then refresh on an annual basis. This gives you a clear product line and its easier to understand for consumers.

Does that mean the Galaxy Tab from just a year ago won't get ICS?

I was using the Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus and over all it was nice. It was a good device, good size, good performance but nothing about it was GREAT IMO. The final straw for me was going to use the Peel remote software. It seemed like such a great addition of function and since my Logitech Harmony remote hasn't been working perfectly lately I figured this solved my want to buy a new Harmony as well. The problem though is that of course the TV in my bedroom won't work with it. I contacted Peel support and their response is "it's a known issue with that model TV and while we've already created a fix for it there is no way for you to get it applied until the ICS update happens". So I contact Samsung and waste a good hour between getting someone in the right department that supports the Tab without cell/3G abilities then get told that while yes it will fix my problem there is no way to do anything about it without ICS and that at this point this specific model Tab is a MAYBE on getting ICS. I clarified a number of times and he stood firm, the Tab lineup overall was said to be getting ICS but this specific model was not 100% getting it. His words were "if we ever release ICS for your device, then it should solve your issue".

Man, that sucks. That's a shitty attitude to have towards customers. I guess they expect you to upgrade by buying a new Galaxy Tab.

I think he just got an idiot CSR, since Samsung's already stated the Tab 7 Plus to be on the office ICS ugprade list.

http://global.samsungtomorrow.com/?p=8894

The ICS-upgradable devices are the GALAXY S II, GALAXY S II LTE, GALAXY Note, GALAXY R, GALAXY Tab 10.1, GALAXY Tab 8.9, GALAXY Tab 7.7, and GALAXY Tab 7.0 Plus.

I don't get what Samsung is doing. Why re-release the Galaxy Tab with almost same specs as last year's model? Just lower the price on last year's model and get Android 4.0 on it now. Make your existing customers happy that you are still supporting them and new customers happy with the affordable price.

To me this seems like customers that bought last years model are getting screwed. And just an FYI, just because Samsung says they are working on an Android update for an older devices doesn't mean it'll actually get it. Because they've said this about other products in the past and changed their mind later.

This is why I didn't buy the Note or the 7.7 Amoled Tab. I considered importing both but I didn't want to reward a company who's clearly not interested in supporting and updating the software on existing products. It's a joke they're releasing this Tab with ICS and haven't updated their more expensive/powerful previous models. This is why I won't buy their upcoming Galaxy SIII or any future Samsung Android products. Only exception will be the Nexus since Google provides the software update rather than Samsung.

uh because they made it cheaper?

they changed quite a bit about this tab to get the price point they needed. its got half the memory, a completely different cpu (which has ICS because its part of the ICS reference platform by the way) among other things.

the tab plus has an msrp of $400. granted you can probably find it in the lower $300 range if you like. but clearly it took some doing to make this one cheaper and still profitable. whtaever it took them to do it, they did...and now you guys are whining becuase uh they didnt just update their old one and keep selling it at a higher cost? given at that higher cost it was unsellable, but cost more to build?

The differences are fairly minimal. And the 7 Plus has barely been out half a year. Samsung releases way too damn many products too quickly. And then takes ages to update older products, if they do at all.

Samsung needs to focus more, release fewer products, support what they release better.

Its worth noting that Samsung has to make money on each device sold. Amazon can subsidize device sales with content sales, Samsung cannot.

Samsung needs to focus more, release fewer products, support what they release better.

QFT for truth. HTC did the same thing with phones that Samsung is doing with their tablets, and it didn't work out for them.

Wow, people really are never happy. When the 7.0 Plus came out at $400 people said it was DOA and now the 7.0 2 is DOA for being the price you guys wanted in the first place?

There is really no reason to get a Kindle Fire or Nook when you can have this for close to the same price.

X2 for the Nook Tablet, being the same price. :p

The concern is that there'll be another ~7in Samsung tablet in 2-3 months and the one you just bought will pretty much be abandoned.

Edit - I've said it before and I'll say it again, Android tablets are held to a much more critical standard. Any little flaw or issue makes them DOA. While an Apple product can have all the same issues and flaws, and still get perfect, glowing endorsements. Hypocrisy.

Eeven if this tab gets abandoned, something I don't expect to happen, it should be easy to come up with unofficial roms for it since it's using the ICS reference platform. I do think you are right about the double standard as that;'s the only reasonable expalnation for all the hate people seem to have for a good product ant a very low price.

$250 for a real tablet is as much a game changer as the Fire was IMO.

Except the Apple product doesn't have the same issues and flaws ;)

it sort of is....but the apple products also get OS updates and support.

another reason i havent jumped onto another tablet since i put cm7 on a nook color. android devices are poorly supported a lot of the time, and there are way, way too many of them.

id really like to see android tablets all run ICS or whatever comes next for android and get like PCs with windows. its nice having a pc and knowing that the OS and software will get updates for years.

id say this is doa. all tablets are just falling in price, because they have to. this one would be a hard sell because for just $150 more you could get the 10 inch version, which is quite a bit nicer. 7 inches (1024x600) isnt that much better than a phone, but 10 inches (1200x900 or whatever it is) is clearly a different class of device

I disagree that 7 inches isn't much better. A 7 inch iPad would sell like hotcakes.

This isnt a bad tablet. I might gift one to my brother for a Netflix device.
