Tried to charge my Galaxy S2 using my in-car charger. The Galaxy S2 does nothing when I plug in the charger. No charging.

I used to use the same charger with my old phone (HTC Desire) without issue. . . in fact that phone seemed to recognise the charger was somehow different from a mains charger and showed a little "car mode" icon. So, erm, what's all that about? And why can't it charge my Samsung?

My guess is the car charger isn't strong enough. Most likely doesn't supply enough current.

Hmm. Well, the cable is attached to the car charger, so basically it's buy a new one, which I kinda figured anyways.

I'm actually more interested in how it is different. . . how my HTC knew it was in a car. I would've thought 5V on USB was 5V on USB.

That part is weird but if it's a HTC phone /w a HTC charger there may be something inside that provides that data.

I do know Samsung phones know if it's charging from a USB port or a charger by the data pins being shorted together. All Samsung chargers short those pins together and the phone charges faster.

I guess I should have said, the car charger was a cheap no-name one from ebay. I'm wondering if this means I'm going to have to buy an official Samsung one, if such a thing exists.

Seeing that it puts the sgs2 in car mode means that usb charger has different resistance value on the data pins that's probably specifically made for the htc phone, why its not charging the phone i don't know.
I'd just get something like this where you can put your own usb cable.
