I have an iPhone 4, but have 2 lines and both are upgrade-eligible. I'd like to try out an Android phone just to see which I like better. I figure, for $10 maybe the Galaxy S II is worth a shot.

Should I wait for something in particular or is this a good phone to experiment on? Does it have ICS? Will it get ICS?

Galaxy S2 is one of the best Android phones right now. It doesn't have ICS yet but it will be getting it in the future. Killer deal for 10 bucks.

SGS2 has ICS, just not the US models, since US Carriers demanded to have their own different variations. I think the AT&T (non-Skyrocket) model of Galaxy S2 will be the first one to get ICS vs other models since it's the closest to the international model.

Bought mine for 50 in october, for the most part i love it. (as much as i can love an android phone)

If you have an upgrade, is the ip4 is still selling for 600, then buy that for 200, sell it for 600, and get the international nexus for ~450 on amazon.

Thats just what i would do if i had an upgrade right now, and wanted an android phone (besides waiting a few months for the sgs3).

If you want an awesome phone for 10 bucks though you cant go wrong with the sgs2.

Hell, for $10, why not? Sure, you're locked into the mothership for two years, but you can upgrade your phone (at your own expense) during the contract if you want. I managed to get AT&T to sell me an Atrix 2 for $50 at only one year into my contract, for another two year re-up. Remember, these guys are selling service, not gear. The phones are just a way to lock you in.

Doubt it. Sprint version has had over a dozen leak versions and the # of bugs has been brought to near 0. It won't be long, I would guess by end of April at the latest.

However, on topic, it is well worth $10.

one more thing to add about the nexus, if you want you can save a ton of money with the t-mobile unlimited plan for 50 bucks.

So if you buy the nexus off contract, and use it for a month and dont like it, you can sell it for pretty close to what you bought it for, and not be locked in to a contract.

Absolutely. I paid $150 for it and it was still well worth it. It's still a top tier phone with all the muscle you'd expect for android to run smooth.

The AT&T i777 is a great phone. It it very responsive, plays games better than any other Android phone I have seen, already has stable ICS ROMs, and it is a tank design-wise (I have dropped mine SOOO much).

I love mine and I completely recommend the device.

No case? I like bare as well, but i feel i need something to help grip the phone. I have the slimmest TPU case on it i can find. Looks and feels great.

Me too. All the plastic really means to me is the 30th time I dropped it on a hard surface it still looks the same and with a case it has a perfect weight/width.

Is this an upgrade from a 3GS? Have 4g? Does android have a good working Netflix app?

I came from a 3GS and it is miles better. A solid upgrade.

It has HSPA 4g, which is the best people in our area is going to get for a while (Odessa/Midland right?).

The Netflix app works great. The screen is like amazing coming from a 3GS.

This would be an upgrade from an iPhone 4 (non-S). Should I just wait until they do this with the GS2 Skyrocket?

Edit: Well, what I mean is I have an iPhone 4 but want to try a comparable Android phone. I'll keep one and sell the other.

Does it have stable ICS roms? I've been checking but haven't seen what I was looking for. I use Unnamed now, and like it because it's basically just the stock rom with some of the excess removed and optimized... meaning none of the stock features are missing/broken. All the other roms seem to go another route, and start with a rom that's fairly broken at first and then they fix bits and pieces as they go.

So is there a rom that has no drawbacks yet?

Hmmmmm.

In that case I still recommend it overall but you might want to consider LTE phones as well (namely the HTC Vivid). I am spending the week down in Houston and if Dallas's HSPA network is overloaded anything like Houston's is then LTE might be almost necessary.

I guess realisitcally if you are fine with the speeds on your 3GS then the SGS2 will be better still even without LTE and then you don't get the LTE battery drain.

Another curveball...

Refurbed S2 Skyrocket for $20?

Not a fan of the Skyrocket.

Worse GPU, worse battery life, lower PPI screen, less community development, is chunkier, and honestly isn't as nice to the touch as the regular SGS2.

This one has been great for me, but I have been using his Ginger-based ROM for a while due to better battery life than Unnamed and the ability to update without wiping (so if more fixes come it doesn't hurt to get them):

I'd get the Skyrocket over the S2 only if you think this is gonna be your main phone for a really long time(long enough for LTE to be really widespread on ATT). If you're in an LTE area, LTE support more than makes up for anything the S2 has over the Skyrocket. If you're not going to actually be using the LTE then the S2 is obviously the superior phone.

Netflix is pretty good on android. Its amazing on my droid razr as the razr does netflix in HD. I wish my sgs2 would play netflix in HD but it is good enough.

Why doesn't SGS2 play netflix in HD? Is it a Motorola only thing? I haven't used Netflix in a while so I'm not sure.

I went from an iPhone 4 to an AT&T SGS2 (i777, not Skyrocket). I thought it was a good upgrade. I switched and haven't missed much.
