One day only, 10/1/10. That ship has sailed!

EDIT: It was so free I didn't have to pay tax. And for some reason my activation fee was refunded on my 2nd bill (new customer)

The leaked pre-Froyo (yeah, yeah) update -- DJ05 -- does, in fact, fix GPS. Also sets soft key light duration to the screen timeout.

Best Buy is repeating their $1 sale for Black Friday, fwiw.

edit- the update also allows you to talk through the mike for calls while you have headphones in.

I still don't get what there is to fix. I've had mine since 10/1 and mine locks within 60 seconds usually.

I have the GPS problem for sure. In fact, I've had it on two devices! My original fascinate, which I got for free during Best Buy's first blowout deal, broke after 3 weeks. It had what I'd call a "white screen of death," where the screen would light up white and not shut off, causing the device to heat up very quickly and necessitating a battery removal. Both Verizon and Best Buy said they'd never seen this problem, but be on the lookout for it.

I'm hoping Froyo does indeed get the GPS to work, because my GPS is completely useless at this point (on the second phone). Even after downloading the app GPS Status.

I guess to be fair, my original fascinate had a screen issue as well, but no GPS issues.

Right now, the next update is going to finish Verizon testing next week. Unfortunately, it's not Froyo. Fortunately, it does fix GPS and the talking-with-headphones thing even the Froyo Galaxy S variants can't do. If you're impatient and rooted check out the irc channel for the leak, both stock and already modded.

Unless you use the GPS often, you may as well hold off on the DJ05 update until it officially comes out. Right now it is still pretty risky installing and uninstalling, it isn't quite like flashing a ROM or kernel. I'm not saying go with the stock VZW one, I'm just saying wait until it is final.

With that said, I still can't wait for 2.2 Froyo goodness. I want more ROMs!

There's no 2.2 yet, but no. OTA updates won't de-root, and any custom ROM will have the root stuff built-in.

If you are rooted, your best choice for upgrading to Froyo when it comes out will be to just download a custom 2.2 ROM already rooted and optimized. After having your phone the way you wanted for so long, why go back to the crap VZW gives you as stock? It's possible that the custom ROMs will be out before the official update, but it is also possible they won't be out for like 24 hours after it starts going. With the way VZW will push the update (not every phone will get it at once, it is like a 3 week long process) you will most likely see rooted 2.2 online before you get bugged about the OTA.

Whaaaaat? I think my Droid locks within 6 seconds if it's feeling poky about things. Did they muck up the GPS that bad on these phones?! How the hell does something like that get through testing?

LOL, I know, the Samsung users don't realize how decent GPS is on other phones, the other thing I notice is that the GPS is horribly inaccurate when you make frequent turns, it's 1/2 block behind all the time...
