Well, tomorrow, Best Buy has free phone Friday, and my whole family is eligible for an upgrade. I asked, and we can all upgrade for free.

Worth getting? I want the X, but for free, I can stick with this if it is good enough.

Nope. I'd avoid any Samsung phone at this point - the GPS is still broken, despite millions of Galaxy S phones being sold across the world. It took them a year to repair the GPS on another of their phones - spend the money if you have to to get another phone.

Better screen and form factor, wonky GPS (recent updates on other Galaxy S phones seem to have fixed, so this may iron itself out), better (full) moddability, no official Froyo for a month, and the Bing thing that seems to get people's nerdrage going.

If you like messing around with the phone and GPS isn't an issue, it's actually a better phone than the X. If you aren't going to flash stuff it's still a good choice unless you depend on GPS.

edit: IMO you should save one of the upgrades for the rumored dual-core stuff right around the corner...

Blackberry?

As much as I hate BB's, and I really really hate saying this, yes the Storm is a better multimedia phone. I cannot believe how my Droid 1 can barely play any fucking video formats, and seems to choke half the time at any audio that's not mp3.

Of course you wouldn't. But keep your fanboyism out of this thread please. If I want an iPhone, I'll ask for one.

Not iPhone Vs Android here. If multimedia's going to be important, I'd recommend ANYTHING over an Android. Mind you I didn't even mention the iPhone, that was all you...

If GPS is the only problem, then I'm getting it. I could give a shit less about it tbh, we've been using the horrible Verizon Navigator on our Voyagers.

Seriously? VZ Navigator is pretty bad. And they charge you for it. Google Navigation is much better. Its fine if you don't use the GPS, but good grief man, Verizon Navigator is to Google Navigation what a matchbox toy is to a Ferrari.

Custom ROMs. Check out XDA. Still early days yet but there are some nice features on the custom kernels already.

Oh, alright. Yeah I'll be customizing it and opening it up as much as I can probably.

I know. We have the family plan currently, unlimited data, text, GPS, etc. And with a Voyager, no alternative. I keep telling my mother to get a GPS, and every time we go on a trip she gets pissed as hell at the shitty phone GPS and just ignores me.

Yeah, that's the Droid. Galaxy S plays pretty much every video out of the box, no transcoding.

Fine, you don't want to hear Q's fanboyism, I'll put it plainly. Android is NOT a media centric OS. There's no acceptable substitute for the iPod or Zune app on other offerings. You can make it mediocre, but I notice I don't listen to music that much on my Captivate.

I don't remember ever asking for an iPod or Zune app though.

I think I've made my mind and I'm going to get it though. For free, it seems good. And if I really don't like it, I'll take it back and get the X. And if I really want a new phone next year, I'll get one.

I love it, we encourage you to stay away from Samsung and you ignore us...

Why did you start this thread again?

I love how when I tried the Captivate it froze and crashed with half the things I tried. If it didnt do that, it just got ridiculously hot during use. Not to mention it felt like a cheap plastic toy.

I've personally handled the Vibrant and Captivate and they both felt like cheap plastic. I know its whats under the hood that counts, but I guess I'm too used to the steel brick that is the Droid 1. The Epic 4G felt a little better, but its because of the keyboard.

I love the lightness of my vibrant. I already dropped it once and it survived, not a scratch, I dropped my droid once, now im on my second droid. The screen cracked and the kb slide went wonky. I prefer the lightness of the vibrant. I also know a guy who dropped his iphone 4, shattered like a bitch.

there is no promise of the Fascinate getting Froyo in a month.

If you want a big beautiful screen and a ton of storage, get it.

If you want to use the GPS based services, are worried about battery life or want Froyo (improved voice search, apps2sd, faster OS) then I would look elsewhere.
