What is an F3R? It is Samsung's "RAID Edition" drive. Basically if you like running spindle drives in RAID and are getting tired of your drives falling out of the array ("degraded" or "rebuilding" message) then you need to stop using normal consumer drives and use enterprise or RAID edition drives. This is the cheapest I've seen a 1TB 7200RPM RAID edition drive.

I think this drive has a 5 year warranty instead of a 3 year warranty on the regular F3. Otherwise, not much difference. I'll stick to my regular F3 drives for $55.

That is true too. All depends on what you want - running RAID? Get the F3R. Not running RAID? Get the F3.

I'm not sure if it is any more reliable or better in any way for a normal single drive use, but it will be for RAID use.

It's probably just different firmware with RAID settings for sleeping, etc. but that could be enough to make it worthwhile for business RAID use, especially RAID 5 with 3+ drives.

That's a guess, but it's what ATI and nvidia do with their graphics cards for gaming vs. CAD/engineering models.

Are there still any consumer HDs that can have TLER enabled to make it suitable for RAID use?

Or were the older WD Caviars the only ones capable of that?

Yikes, been running 4 of the non-raid in 2 zero arrays for 1+ years....no problems...thankfully. Screaming fast and so far...reliable.
