Admittedly when the first stories of the Samsung Galaxy Note 7 catching fire were published, my initial thoughts were someone did it on purpose to get media attention, or maybe they used a bad charger, but I was wrong. And I’m sorry for thinking that.

After multiple news outlets reported the stories and more continued to pile on, Samsung opened an investigation and found the stories to be true. Samsung issued a full recall, without government assistance in the US, and there are reports almost daily of new incidents of Note 7s catching fire even after the voluntary recall.

After doing some research, it appears the same problem is afflicting the Galaxy S7 and S7 edge. I cannot confirm if this is due to faulty batteries, but given the nature of the Note 7 it’s more than likely due to a Samsung issue. Granted the S7 has been out much longer than the Note 7, but that doesn’t mean the stories aren’t true.

I had mine in an insulating TPU case and just switched to a much thinner polycarbonate/metal one (to disapate heat better), and I was just browsing around over wireless AC. It got pretty warm so I put it on the 2.4GHZ band and it's cooling down.

I don't see how it's possible that a similar issue exists with the S7. If around one hundred Note 7s have exploded in less than a month after release, then I imagine that we would've heard about hundreds of S7s explode and catch fire already. It looks like cellphones in general can catch fire, but there is just something very faulty with the Note 7 that makes it much more prone to exploding.

Yeah, I'm not sure I buy it either. Unless it's a recent batch of bad batteries and didn't affect the launch S7s... so maybe we're starting to see the uptick in bad S7 batteries?

The previous phone fires have been a statistical outlier, most I hear about suffered some sort of damage prior to the incident, I don't think the S7 has a problem, but Samsung's Note fires have put all their phones under the microscope, social media will pick up on every Samsung branded phone catching fire for a long time...

Almost half a year of selling S7 phones, would've been issues before now if they're were to be any imho.

Samsung should include a fire extinguisher with every phone. Problems solved.

This whole issue is overblown anyway, it's not like they removed the headphone jack or something really stupid . So it catches fire sometimes... So what? Maybe you shouldn't be charging your phone so close to your valuables or children or whatever, these are high performance devices that need you to pay attention. Would you refill the gas tank in your Ferrari in the living room?

Unless recently manufactured S7s also have batteries from the same defective line, I don't think there's any reason to assume they also are at risk. It is certainly possible that did in fact happen, but I expect that since the S7 has been out for a while that if any such phones did exist Samsung would probably have been able to catch them before they were shipped off to retailers as it's unlikely that there's a short supply of devices this long after launch to necessitate pushing inventory through the channel as quickly as possible.
