Just got a new monitor to replace my old CRT.

I've already installed the monitor drivers (although I didn't see any changes) and I'm still getting used to the 1360x768 res. Also, I'm trying to figure out how to make the fonts look thicker, among other things.
Anyway, I posted here because, at one random point in time yesterday and after I restarted the PC, the screen suddenly went into this weird "screen saver mode", where it was cycling through a number of colors (red, green, etc). I was moving the mouse and pressing the keyboard's wake button to no avail. The only thing that snapped it out of its trance was when I pressed the monitor's "source" (digital/analog) button.
Can anyone tell me the cause of this error? Do I have a defective monitor / cable? I already ruled out XP, since I have long since disabled the screen saver and hibernate functions. I also set my monitor to power down after 3 hours ... but that happened a few minutes after restarting. No programs were running / in the background.
