Samsung 128MB 400Mhz DDR SDRAM

Samsung Electronics has introduced a 128-Megabit Double-Data-Rate Synchronous DRAM (DDR SDRAM)
capable of processing data at 3.2 Gigabytes per second, the fastest DRAM available today. The DDR
chip operates on a clock speed of 400MHz, so data transmission is 800Mbps With a data processing
speed that is 30 percent faster than that of the 300MHz DDR SDRAM, Samsung's new 400MHz chip
satisfies the high-speed requirements of today's DDR graphics memory market.

The chip operates on 2.8 volts and comes in a 12mm by 12mm 144-ball fine-pitch ball grid array (FBGA)
package, the JEDEC standard for x32 DDR SDRAMs. Therefore, memory upgrades can be performed
without having to replace the graphics board. Samsung Electronics completed development of the
300MHz DDR SDRAM last year. Now, the company is the first to introduce the 400MHz device, thereby
maintaining its leadership position in the DDR graphics memory market.

Samsung is currently sampling its 400MHz DDR graphic memory - part number K4D26323RA-GC25 -- to
major customers. The company plans to start mass production from the second quarter. DDR chips are
expected to be used in up to 70 percent of all the graphics boards this year. Thus, graphics board memory
requirements are quickly moving from conventional SDRAMs to DDR SDRAMs. The x32 DDR SDRAM is used
in routers and network switches as well as in graphics buffer memory, which requires high-speed data
processing capability. The device is also widely used in gaming platforms, set-top boxes and other
consumer products.

i have always wondered why the video cards never had this option couldn't you do this now and would you be able somehow to increase the bandwidth by upgrading the ram say from 256 bit to 512 bit?

or would that make any difference?

what i think it means is that Manufacturers can replace the ram on their video cards (in the factory) with relative ease, not us consumers. Though we can always try 🙂

This RAM I believe is allready being used in the Xbox (Xbox does use PC3200 DDR, but I can't remember if it's Samsung). Yea, this prolly will be limited to video cards for a long time (if not forever).
