Samsung begins Froyo rollout for Galaxy S devices

Well tickle me pink. Looks like its actually happening. Good for Samsung. If you want to play in the high end smartphone market, keeping up your devices with OS updates is essential.

Android 2.2 JPM for the Galaxy S reportedly adds the following:

* Android 2.2 JIT compiler
* Adobe Flash Player 10.1 compatibility
* New Android Market with auto-updating
* Speed improvements
* Pinch-to-zoom homescreen flyover
* Improved default keyboard
* Quick links to "GPS" and "Auto rotation" toggles on notification bar added
* Slightly different graphics and transitions with app drawer and default icon dock
* Colored icons in settings
* GPS Fix
* Colored settings icons
* Media Hub
* Darker menu theme, navy blue color
* Better Exchange support
* Video records in MP4 format
* New Search widget
* New Gmail application

But the i9000 is completely different than US models. Different hardware, drivers, everything. You have been able to load hacked Froyo onto them for months.

Not to thread crap...but this really isn't news to US folks. Its the same thing that Samsung has been yapping about for months and was available via Kies for a while.

Uh... no it's not. It's the same base hardware platform. There's been modded i9000 roms floating around that WORK on the Vibrant. There are SOME differences, but not terribly many.

I know that the FM is not on the US GSs but I also thought there was more HW difs.

? Epic has gorilla glass. vibrant and captivate doesnt? I might be a bit hard on samsung sometimes but I guess my phone has only been out for a month and a half

Pretty sure the Vibrant is a oleophobic plastic resin based composite, but I could be wrong. Hasn't scratched at all on me, but I baby the hell out of it.

I think it's Gorilla Glass across the board http://www.engadget.com/2010/08/24/samsung-galaxy-s-sporting-gorilla-glass-to-protect-that-precious/

Either way, it's about time we're getting Froyo. I hope it improves battery performance, I love my Epic (no GPS issues) but the battery life isn't the greatest.

DON'T BUY A VIBRANT!

ji6 is extremely YMMV. Check out the Vibrant General section over at XDA. Tons of folks with bricked phones and no improvement on their GPS. Also Froyo upgrade date IS NOT for sure.

Is the Vibrant really that bad?

IMO even taking the gps problems into account the Galaxy S phones are still among the best Android phones money can buy, the only other phone that's close is the Droid X.

Don't know why you care so much about GPS but I use my Captivate for web browsing, music and videos, and that's where it excels. Also love the powerful processor and screen.

tasker, nav, even web browsing. A ton of apps tie into gps if you want local info. The problem is that the gps will continue to refresh if it doesn't find a location. It will crash/burn up battery/ be stupid.

So you turn off location. Problem solved. I've not had a single problem with my Vibrant. Yes, the GPS has issues, but I haven't needed to use it for anything to date.

The stuff that's been out for months was early early code leaks with bugs long since fixed in the Eclair updates. This--like the Captivate leak--is way ahead. And the accumulated developer knowledge across the platform has exploded.

I'll lmao when American Galaxy Ss get working Cyanogen before the G2.

He just doesn't like it because he wanted more features than what the phone sold with. He can't comprehend that the phone is advertised with a certain feature set and software set. Anything beyond that like Kernel updates, ect shouldn't be expected and demanded of the manufacturer.

At this point, you're just trolling. The only app that needs GPS is navigator: others are at least as happy with cell triangulation. (Tasker even tells you basically never to use gps or you'll kill the battery!) And no, gps doesn't use battery if you leave it off (or have tasker activate it only with navigator).
