Samsung sells one million Galaxy Tab units, throws an Android party to celebrate
By Darren Murph posted Dec 3rd 2010 11:04AM Wondering just how well a tablet would do if picked up and marketed by all four major carriers in America? We're still waiting for the breakdown within our borders, but there's hardly a doubt that the unprecedented carrier arrangement has helped Samsung shatter its estimates on Galaxy Tab sales. Purportedly, the outfit has just passed the one million mark in global sales of the 7-inch Android tablet, but Information Week is quick to point out that Sammy's not clear on whether that's units in the sales channel or units in the hands of consumers. Either way, one million's nothing to scoff at, particularly when you consider that only 600,000 had been sold as of November 22nd. The firm's now hoping to move 1.5 million of 'em by the year's end, and while that's still well short of the estimated seven million iPads that have been sold to date, it's a sales rate that we're sure no one at Samsung is kvetching about.

Surprising, to say the least.

Hmm. Good that they are selling merchandise, good for the economy. I still feel the Tab is priced higher than what it should be.

You know it's just all those Samsung fanboys who would buy crap in a bag if Samsung put it on the market. Those guys will buy anything!

I think you're talking about Sony fanboys... I find Samsung to be equal to Sony in most regards, at least with regards to general consumer electronics. However, I find a lot of idiots who will pay higher for Sony products when they're roughly equal with Samsung.

Hmmm, seems Samsung may be a bit premature with those figures... Although the market is primed for a non Apple tablet.

When Samsung makes a badass system like the PS3, a TV better than Sony, and a laptop better than Sony, contact me.

Until then, spout ignorance elsewhere.

I have to admit I'm pleasantly surprised that the Tab has sold so well. Sure it isn't close to catching up to the iPad but it's a much more viable competitor than many of us expected. It's also a good indication that there is room for more quality tablets on the market.

Ha Ha, you just said that Sony makes good computers...thanks for the laugh. (Oh, and don't make me list all the Sony products that I've owned that have failed within 2 months of warranty expiration. I can say however, that my Sony clock radio with a digital tuner that I bought in 1990 is still going strong 20 years later.)

they cater to both high and low end products, though keep in mind every electronic company has its failures. I have a Sony Vaio computer that is probably about 8 or 9 yrs old now and still works great, its now my Linux box.:D

Care to explain why my comment had a fail picture as a reply? I can't read minds. Your post was a "fail" because I have no idea what your point is suppose to be other than to somehow imply I have failed. Failed at what, I don't even know.

When Samsung makes a badass system like the PS3, a TV better than Sony, and a laptop better than Sony, contact me.

I've boxed up my PS3 cause it's out of warranty and the damn drive failed on me for the second time. I have had issues with my PS1 and PS2.

Sony laptops are a pain in the ass to work with if you need anything repaired. You wouldn't have believed the run-around I had to go through to get the keyboard replaced on a brand new Sony Viao.

As for the TV's. Go look on the web and in popular audio video mags. Samsung products rank right up there with Sony products. I know. I looked. If you believe otherwise, prove me wrong. Show me a reputable web site where Sony is shown to be ranked consistently higher than Samsung.

The following is a general comment and not aimed at any one person. Some of you got your panties in a bunch when I stated my opinion that Samsung is the equal of Sony today. Guys, chill. I didn't insult your mother. I didn't sleep with your daughter. I only stated an opinion. Lighten up.

Haha I use work with them and sell them every day. Thanks for the laugh.

And I've sent my PS3 off to Sony to get it repaired. Electronics fail once in a while. Name one that hasn't. Makes no difference how good the system is.

Go look at a Sony TV. Now look at a Samsung. See the difference? I do. That is my proof. You never gave a page that said anything, so I have no need to. Prove me wrong.

It's called opinion, and I could say a piece of shit looked better than your car and you couldn't prove I was "wrong".

Your panties were bunched before you even commented in the thread apparently, expressing your hate for Sony products in a thread about the Samsung tablets. Pot, meet kettle.

That sort of picture is a no-go round these parts.

Purely anecdotal evidence as you yourself will note. I've done the eyeball test myself and I'd have to say that considering the price ranges of both companies, their products are roughly equal.

I have looked through mags that specialize in testing HDTV's and in general, Samsungs come out roughly equal to Sonys. And these guys use not just eyeball tests but equipment used to check the color reproduction and all of that fancy nonsense.

It's called opinion, and I could say a piece of shit looked better than your car and you couldn't prove I was "wrong".
True. But that's what all of that fancy schmancy equipment that people who specialize in testing audio and video equipment is for and again, in general, Samsungs are the equal of Sony.

LoL. Ok. Man, I didn't even name one person when I made the Sony comment. Was it out of line a bit? Perhaps. But again, I didn't name one single person. Look how many came out of the woodworks and felt offended. Look how many refuted my comments with nothing but anecdotal evidence to back it up.

To be honest, I was aiming more towards Joe Consumer who in general doesn't research a single thing but buys certain products due to hype or because of past reputation. There's a lot of folks who buy Sony only because it's Sony and Sony was arguably the premiere electronics company in the 80's and maybe early 90's.

I happen to own a few Sony products (expensive ones at that and a Sony HDTV) but I carefully choose and research what I buy. I have no bias. I will buy Sony again. But I carefully research what I buy. To me, Sony is long past being the best. Samsung is equal to Sony and the only reason Sony still has products like the PS3 is due to the high cost and risk of being a video console producer. Just ask Microsoft.

About one of the last areas where Sony is better than Samsung in markets they compete in is cameras. And that's both still pictures and moving. But don't try to make me believe due to your eyeball tests that a Sony HDTV is better than a Samsung. I've personally went and looked in Best Buys and Crutchfield as well as read reviews in audio video mags and the Samsung in the same price range as a Sony is roughly equal. Obviously every year is different as new models get released and there will be times when Sony trumps Samsung but the opposite is true as well.

Bottom line is Sony is no longer the company it once was. Samsung is largely equal with Sony.

This is ridiculous, this thread is about the samsung tablet not about the Sony brand.

I think samsung is on the right track on being a tablet competitor.

Sorry guys I posted that earlier as a joke in regards to how Apple news is received and did not expect it to cause the train to completely derail into a discussion on Sony.

One thing to note from the article is that no one is clear if the sales numbers are actually the quantity sold to customers or the quantity pushed into the retail pipeline. I know we had similar questions when the iPad numbers initially showed up but to be honest I'm not sure if it really matters at this point. The bottom line is that Samsung has at the very least pushed a million of these to market. That's more than I expected.

Ah. I see. So a post with no mention of Apple whatsoever was joking about Apple. I see. I'll remember the universe revolves around Apple next time anything about Google, Sony, Samsung, whoever, comes up.

I know I have an Apple iPhone. I happened to do proper research before buying one but not everything has to be compared to an iPhone or to Apple. But I don't and won't automatically throw Apple into a conversation just because.

And for the record, I see Samsung as Sony's biggest competitor. That's why I put Sony in there. Sony and Samsung competes in almost every major category whereas Apple only really competes with Sony in the cell phone and portable audio player markets.

i agree samsung put out really high quality stuff these days, almost on par with sony and is priced similarly. they have beautiful notebooks and phones. but im surprised the tab is selling well given its price (isnt it like 599?). i wouldnt be willing to spend that much until it at least gets gingerbread

when or if it makes it to $299, i'm in. its not really a must have device or anything, more like another convenient, fun device that can uncomfortably fit in your pocket

for samsung my price point would even be $399, but for these to be mainstrean theyd probably have to be 250-300. youre right they dont provide that much functionality over a smartphone to justify current prices

It's the only decent tablet out other than iPad. It shows that people want tablets galore which is great for all of us. Just like iPhone pushed the competition for smartphones, iPad is pushing the competition for tablets and in the end, us as consumers win who ever we support.

i hope tablets dont kill netbooks, theyre still useful devices to have as well, and would be even more useful if they were faster. i guess thats what chromeOS is for though
