Samsung 955DF: good monitor or junk-o-matic?

I have heard that people love the monitor and that people hate it. I have heard that it is grainy at high resolutions and I have heard that you can remove that problem via the built-in control panel. Could you please relate both your good and your bad experiences with this monitor?

Also, is it the nature of ShadowMask to be crappier than ApetureGrille?

Thanks.

No, some shadow mask monitors are excellent. I personally prefer AG because the picture just *looks* better. I've seen two 955DF's and the corners were grainy at ALL resolutions on both monitors. It was also huge and emitted enough heat to cook a Thanksgiving turkey, or rather a Christmas ham :)

The 955 is Samsung's low end 19". I'm sure it isn't that bad, but if you can do without the flat screen, the 950p is pretty close in price and has a much better image quality.

Based on my experience, I'd have to tell you to pass on the 955DF. I had two of them and both were quite grainy. While the on-screen controls allow you to soften the image to remove some of the grain, this is not always the best option. I had two of them in my home this past Summer and both had the same issues - too grainy! Plus, I looked at one over at a local computer store. The 955DF there also experienced the same issue.

As another user reported, the 950P displays a better image. I owned the 900P (predecessor to the 950P) and after the experience I had with the 955DF monitor, I was quite happy to put the 900P back on my desktop due to the better quality of image.

I've since purchased a KDS AV-195TF which runs about $100 more than the 955DF. I'm very happy with this monitor and quite happy that I selected this monitor to be on my desktop.
