Samsung 950p vs 900IFT

I'm interested in a couple of Samsung shadow mask tubes. Can anyone enlighten me as to why I should pay ~$100 more for the 900 IFT vs the 950p?

Dot pitch is .20 vs .26 and flat shadow mask vs shadow mask (IFT vs p). Otherwise, specs for both appear similar.

I haven't found them both in the same store yet to compare, and getting any useful info from a video bank is tough.

Haven't seen much review material for the IFT yet, but the p seems pretty well liked.

Thanks!

The IFT uses the newer DynaFlat IFT tube, which is a flat screen monitor. The 950P is the conventional curved shaped monitor. The 900IFT's dot pitch is 0.20mm horizontal(but 0.24mm diagonal, which is what really counts), so it has a 0.02mm advantage over the 950P, however 0.24mm is still the best in the industry today. The specs are similar, if you're not really into the flat screen and small dot pitch, get the 950P.

speedlever: I just bought a 950P based on PC World's recommendation. I now wish that I had gotten a monitor with smaller DPI. I had a 17" monitor with 26mm which was great, but the extra 2 inches seemed to reduce the "apparent" clearness.

That .24 pitch was the missing link in the specs. Now I have a better handle on comparable specs. Wish Samsung would stick with a standard!

I'm coming from a 12.1 inch TFT laptop screen, so I don't know if that .24 vs the .26 will be important or not to me. Nor if the flat vs the curved tube will matter.

My usage will be primarily home office type stuff and web browsing on a 1 Gig Tbird/Asus A7V/256Mb PC133/Leadtek GeForce2 MX/IBM 75GXP Deskstar HD/Plextor 12/10/32a CDRW/SB live! value/Win2k system that I'm having built.

Not much gaming is planned (but ya never know!)

I'd go for the 900ift. I own 950p myself, and I'm not very happy with the picture quality. Plus that 1600x1280x85hz isn't that usefull since I can't quite run 1600x1280 on 19" monitor.

Samsung IS sticking with the standards, every company today uses "horizontal" dot pitch to mislead people, "diagonal" dot pitch is what really counts. And yes, you will see a difference bewteen 0.26mm and 0.24mm, its sharper, after all the 900IFT uses a more advanced and fine tuned tube than the 950P. If you have the money, definitely go for the flat 900IFT, if money is an issue then 950P will serve you just fine.

By standard, I meant the measurement specs listed on their web site.

The 900IFT is listed as .20 mm dot pitch HORIZONTAL and the 950p is listed as .26 mm (no dimension).

I figured the p was a diagonal measurement, but didn't know the geometry of the ift, so I couldn't guess at the diagonal measurement so as to compare with the p.

Thanks to all for the recommendation.

Methinks I'll spend the extra $100 on the IFT. 🙂

Argo,

Why are you not happy with the pic quality of the 950p? Fuzzy? Screen defects?

Did you buy the 950p unseen?

I have not found a 900IFT anywhere to see yet.

Digging deeper into the Forum msgs here, I find that the IFT series of Samsung monitors are being discontinued. Hmmm.

Maybe I'll peek over at the AG monitors.

Dare I look at the 900NF monitor?

(just where does the $$ bleeding stop?) 😉

The IFTs are only discontinued in Korea, its still a production unit in the US. It doesnt use the old IFT tube(messed up), instead they put the newer DynaFlat tubes in there for the US version.

Ah, so the 900ift is still in production.

Well, should one decide to compare the 900ift and the 900nf, how would that shake out?

I read about bowing of lines on the nf tube. Is that a "feature" of AG monitors in general? Any significant pros/cons with either of these tubes?

Thanks!

<<Well, should one decide to compare the 900ift and the 900nf, how would that shake out?>>

That, I cant answer for you, nor can anybody else. It's a matter of preferrence, whether you like apples or oranges. The IFT is a shadow mask tube, the NF is an aperture grille. Some people like one, some like the other.

<<I read about bowing of lines on the nf tube. Is that a "feature" of AG monitors in general? >>

You mean the two vertical lines that go across the screen? Or is it an image distortion caused by a certain video cards? If you're talking about the lines, yes, there are two thin lines, called damper wires to hold the screen together. So yes, any aperture grille monitor has this distinctive feature. The image problem, is only caused by the ATI Radeon, if you dont have this video card you shouldnt worry about it.

<<Any significant pros/cons with either of these tubes?>>

Pros for the 900IFT, razor sharp dot pitch, flat screen, excellent image/text quality, and a very reasonable price. Cons, well, the video bandwidth, as well as resos and refresh rates can be higher.

Pros for the 900NF, bright and vivid colors, great color saturations, very realistic looking image quality, sharp text quality as well. The resolutions and refresh rates are awesome. The price is a little bit more than the 900IFT. And finally the two thin lines.

No, I wasn't talking about the AG lines. Somewhere in my research, I found some folks who felt the monitor had unacceptable geometry problems, and displayed lines of text with a bow in the top center, iirc.

I can't remember where I read that now... but it was likely here or at Sharkyextreme.

IAC, I find myself in the same boat as Ben88... and need to go BACK to the store to look at the 955df and NEC multisync to see if I can discern any difference for MY eyes!

The 900ift and 900nf are not to be found on display in my area.

Yea, look for a similar monitor(Mitsubishi, Iiyama Pro, ViewSonic PF, NEC multisync) with the same DiamondTron NF tube, and then compare. The Samsung use the same tube so they should look the same or better.

I just remembered:

Samsung is ending rebates on the 955DF and 2 other CRTs tomorrow - I'm hoping they might run something in Nov on the 900IFT or NF. Just an idea if you can hold out a day or 2-- something might (or might not) pan out.
