Samsung 910T vs. Viewsonic VP912b

Well, I took the newegg deal for the 910T today ($460), hearing that it is an extremely crisp display, and, despite the old 25ms panel, use of the DVI connection limits ghosting and provides sharp text. Then, I have the Viewsonic VP912b to consider:

Samsung
Pros:

- Cheap for relatively high-end 19" LCD at $460.
- Great contrast ratio (650:1? Advertised at 1000:1, I don't really believe that)

Cons:

- Panel is thick as hell.
- 25ms response time.
- I hate the base on this thing.

Viewsonic
Pros:

- Panel is thinner.
- 12ms reponse time promises limited if any ghosting, and is the only 19" with that type of response time.
- I like the panel base better than that of the Samsung one, though I can probably change it (since both use VESA?)

Cons:

- It costs $600 (which is still amazingly good compared to the Samsun 193P, which, although it has greater contrast ratio, is just a 20ms panel and costs $700), which is about $100 more than the 910T off sale, and $150 more than the price I got.

So, whaddya think, cancel 910T and save up for this LCD, or go ahead with the 910T? Reviews aren't really helpful: basically, 910T has great contrast while VP912b is unsurpassed in response time, otherwise, both are excellent.

I pretty much do half gaming and half text-based stuff.

Wow! The Viewsonic dropped in price by $100? Anyway, there's no question. Get the 912b! It is far superior in everything. It has the best panel on the market today.

The 910T probably ain't so hot in games: it's only a 25ms panel. It's not the same screen as the beautiful 12ms 710T at all.

I went and bought the samsung 912n.

25ms response time, vga only.

I'll be the first one to admit, it doesnt look the hotest on paper. But it's worked out fine for me. I'm not a heavy gamer, although I do play Americas Army and HL2 often. I am a college student, so I do more school work than gaming.

I was worried about the 25ms response time, but it seems fine to me. I can't notice any ghosting.

Perhaps that helps with the concerns of the 25ms response time?

Yeah, the only game i have had ghosting on was UT2k4. HL2 CS:S all were fine. When you play games at low res. then theghosting is more apparent. But at 1600x1200 or whatever the max is on yours, the ghosting is subtle to "nonexistant". I mean if i really try to look for it, ill find it, but by then, my face had already been blown away by a sniper.

Thats a good point about the higher resolutions. I run mine at 1280x1024 (the native resolution). Looks like crap in 1024x768 while gaming.

Get a CRT if you're worried about ghosting and picture quality. Otherwise if you're tight on space or you're getting in "style" get the less expense of the two. Both are good companies with great products. I was researching LCD for weeks (including the 910T and the 912B) before I finally decided not to get one. LCD technology is still in it's infancy. The technology is getting better everyday and prices have been falling steadly. I'm still not sold on the picture quality and refresh speed of the current LCD's. I'm betting in a year they'll be some major improvements.

Thanks for all the responses.

Well, I stayed with the $460 910T, mostly because I don't really want to spend another $150 or bother cancelling and reordering, even if the 912b is just so much better.

The 910T does have DVI, but it's, like many of you pointed out, a 25ms panel. But, hopefully, it won't ghost. All I know is, it's going to be a lot more confortable looking at 19" LCD when doing work.

Edward Lee:

I agree wholeheartedly with you. I own a 21" NEC CRT, and it is terrific (though it is dying, I've had it for many years, got it for $150 from a friend). The primary reasons I chose to go with LCD is 1.) to save table space, the NEC crushes my table and takes up half of it 2.) because they're just too damn cool.

But, on the system I'm planning it for, it has a 17" 0.25mm apgril CRT right now, which is not that terrific at all.

Can you give us a review on the 910T? I am also considering this monitor. I don't play games and I only watch DVDs occasionally, so response time means little to me. I'm more concerned about viewing angles (particularly vertical viewing angles) and sharpness of text. If these are very good, than I will go for the 910T. The VP912B is great, but it has a shiny screen and narrower viewing angles, according to the specs.

asmack:

Sorry for the late response. I just got back from vacation and setup the monitor. Excuse me if my "review" seems a little biased, but this is the first big LCD I have ever used for more than 30 minutes.

Ordered from Newegg for $450 (feeling kind of bad since guys are getting Dell FP2005 for this price), received with apparently no dead pixels (well, none that I have noticed yet).

Pros:

Ok, well, front what I can see, this LCD is extremely bright, text is sharp and clear and easily legible at 1024x1280 with normal 96 dpi fonts. The screen is not shiny at all and I am experiencing absolutely no glare. Comes with Pivot software for rotational viewing (which works like a charm and I am using right now) along with a DVI cable. The stand is a bit on the light side, but keeps the panel still and yet is still easy to move. The panel rotates and adjusts with ease, but there is no way to extend the neck of the mount (no up-down translation). As for viewing angle, if I were to look at the screen from the side (180 deg), I notice almost no color warping, and only a slight color dimming. As far as OfficeApp work/dv editing/photo editing/web surfing, I couldn't ask for better.

Cons:
Well, obviously, gaming is not it's brightest spot (25 ms). So far, I have played two games: NFSU2 and MVP Baseball 2004. Running both at 1024x1280 32bpp, there was only slight blurring in NFSU2 (turn off the blur effect in the game and you're set), however, MVP Baseball 2004 showed extensive blurring in player movements, pitching, and a general haziness. It's playable, but might make some dizzy. I will try HL2, UT2k4, Madden and a few others when I get the chance, and of course watch a DVD.

Other gripes: The control buttons. They look gorgeous and fit right into the rigid, professional panel design, but they are small and not clearly labelled (labels are engaved into plastic).

Well, I'll write more as they come.

It's incredible what a shady area 19" LCDs is.

Yes, please post more! I am considering so many right now and am having an incredibly difficult time picking one.

Thanks for the review, Farmer.

Just one last thing if you don't mind. How is the vertical viewing angles on the 910t? I know the horizontal ones are good, but I have a tendency to slouch very low in my chair, and I'd like to know if the colors in the image shift dramatically when viewed from below. I know several monitors that do well when viewed from above, but not from below.

Thanks in advance!
