I have dual 850evo 500GB drives. I was under the impression that the 850 maxed out the SATA III bus. If you look at the 860evo vs. 850evo, they are very close in performance. So it looks like the 870QVO is a spinner drive replacement solution.

If I were samsung I would focus more on next gen NVMe tech.

Still a lot of growth left in speeds that are not just sequential reads/writes. QVO can be a good alternative for mass storage if the controller handles the flash well.

Shmee - Samsung is expected to release the Samsung 980 Pro, PCI-e, M.2 4.0 x 4, Generation4, NVMe solid state drive sometime in August. Random read / writes for the 1TB model is listed as 6,500 / 5,000 MB/s. That's a little bit of improvement over the current Phison E16 models; however, I doubt users will be able to see or feel any difference in performance.

As JL mentions above, we are seeing the 980 Pro soon (check the other thread for my hardware analysis on that). Latencies are expected to be ~10% lower (faster) on that generation of MLC but moreover keep in mind MLC read times are superior to TLC and especially QLC. If you're instead talking about next-gen TLC, we will have drives at 7/6 GB/s (maximum of x4 PCIe 4.0) quite abundantly but I think in some ways the lower-end models might be more interesting. No word yet on Samsung's movements with anything like the 980 EVO, although I agree the 870 QVO is a disappointment.

What do you guys suggest for a gaming SSD between now and the end of the year? The Pro drives have been on the pricey side, I've used EVOs.
