Samsung 850 Pro 1tb to 960 Pro 1tb upgrade worth it?

I currently have a Samsung 850 Pro 1tb SATA SSD in my rig, which I've had for some time. The drive performs well, and I haven't had any issues with it during the time that I've owned it.

But being a cutting edge kind of guy, I've been eyeballing the hell out of a Samsung 960 Pro 1tb NVMe drive. My question is, what should I expect from upgrading? I know my synthetic benchmark scores will be much greater, but will my regular day to day performance also increase?

It depends on what your "regular day to day performance" is.

However, it is unlikely for most people. But don't get me wrong, NVMe drives are nice and fast. They are more or less the latest 'cool' toy for enthusiasts. They will shave a few seconds off here and there, but the difference is no where near what you get from going to a SSD from a HDD.

Oh well, I went ahead and bought it 😎 Could not resist such a price! I wonder how long it will be before games change their loading algorithms to utilize the faster speeds of these SSDs?

Man, you must have clicked buy right after posting here. 😉

I'd imagine we should really start seeing real increases within the next few years. As they become more common, Microsoft and Apple will take advantage of it. Who knows, maybe the next respective OS releases will get us there.

Yeah I bought it right after posting. The price was just too good to pass up, and I couldn't say no. $490 brand new with priority shipping included 😀

I'm going to sell my 850 pro to a guy I know at work, so I should recover some of the money I spent on the new NVMe drive.

BTW, here's something of interest regarding loading times. Apparently, load times are heavily influenced by CPU speed and core count as well. This doesn't really surprise me to be honest, as games not only have to be loaded, but decompressed as well and we all know that compression and decompression is heavy on the CPU and scales well across multiple cores/threads.

I know that in Mass Effect Andromeda, when loading a new area or level, my CPU will be nearly maxed out and this is an overclocked 6900K! 😱

A very beneficial part of a nvme drive is it cuts down on cables inside your PC (SATA and Power cables). I have zero regular SSD's in my rig, all NVMe drives. I love the fact I have zero SATA cables in this rig.
