Samsung 850 EVO still good to buy? Any EOL?

I'm curious if the 850 EVO is still a good product to buy? From specs it looks great, but at the same time I remember how quickly Samsung refreshed its SSD products years ago. I haven't seen any rumors or anything, and it's interesting how Samsung released a 4TB variant in 2016--would there be a refresh for the older products too using new NAND chips? I'm also wondering with the new 960 Pro ans 960 EVOs, if they're going to give the old SATA drives a boost too with newer chips.

Anyhow, I'm thinking of buying a 512 or 1tb drive as a secondary drive to replace my WD Black that's over 7 years old. I already have an 850 Pro as a boot drive, but this would be a second drive where I install my games.

Part of my motivation is just to get rid of old mechanical drives as it makes for a much cleaner case especially with cases that have SSD trays behind the motherboard. I'm trying to go from 1 SSD & 3 HDDs down to 2 SSDs and 1 HDD.

Not going to happen. They're already mostly maxed out at the SATA interface. The only real direction for them to go is to make them have lower power consumption.

They're still good drives (among the best for SATA 2.5"), don't hesitate, if you want one.

If you have normal consumer workloads, get the EVO. If you have write-heavy / prosumer loads, get the Pro.

The 850 EVO has already moved from the 32-layer V-NAND to the 48-layer V-NAND. That's why there's now a 4TB model and no longer a 120GB model. They can probably update it again with 64-layer V-NAND without making major changes to the controller, and there's not much other reason for them to mess with what's already the best SATA controllers.

I use around 20 850 Evo 1tb drives and I keep buying more as the price goes down. I have yet to have any issues with them and they are great drives. In my house all spinner drives are gone. 5 in my main desktop, 1 in each of my 4 laptops, my NAS has 4 and even my PS4 and Xbox one s have one in them. No spinny for me ever again.
