Samsung 850 250gb evo worth it for $89.99?

I'm a gamer that's been on the fence of getting a SSD for a long time now. I imagine probably any ssd is better than my hdd at this point, but newegg sent me a 10% off coupon code that would knock ten dollars off the $100 samsung so I'm contemplating if now is as good as it's going to get. Money is kind of tight, or I would have upgraded to a ssd sooner.

It's a pretty good deal. I got mine for $100.
FYI they are pretty regularly on sale for $90-100 lately.

If you have the money and need for it, I'd say go for it.
Not sure where you are seeing $100, but newegg shows $117 for me.

SSD is GREAT as an OS drive. Lots of things with the OS can benefit from the massive increase in IO than an SSD provides.

Games? Not so much. Faster load time here and there, sure. But worth the outlay? Not so sure....since most games are not IO bound.

If you are running a stack of older SATA drives, then you will be better off getting a good but inexpensive 120GB SSD for your OS and a 1TB WD Blue WD10EZEX for about the same price as one 250 GB SSD.

I've been using SSD's as OS drives for years and GOOD platter drives as game storage drives, but I play MMO's primarily. All the advantages on running an MMO on an SSD are immediately lost at login screen.

I run a ssd for the os and a couple of wd blacks for data and programs and it works out pretty good. When I am financially able I want to free myself of all spinners and go all ssd.

Crap, looks like they just raised it to $117. -_- Seeing it on sale for $99 is rare enough, but getting it on sale when I have a 10% off coupon code for SSD's is something that will probably never happen again. I guess I waited too long to pull the trigger. Oh well.

PLEASE GET SSD! I just recently overhauled a couple computers and had to "go back" to using the computer without the SSD, and oh man I forgot how slow it can be for doing maintenance/install stuff. Or just multiple reboots, I thought the computer was frozen if not for the clicking sound of the HDD.

Then I go back to the SSD-based install and it's so much better.

But generally, once you go to SSD and get used to it, then the impact sort of fades and you take it for granted. Like switching to a bigger TV or cell phone. Once you use the better situation, you can't stand to go back, but after using it a while you take it for granted and forget how awesome it is.

So if you ever reboot, or do maintenance/installations/scans, definitely get it asap. I love my 250 GB Samsung 850 EVO, got it for $100 and was happy with that "deal" so your deal is even better.

I disagree. I have the 250gb EVO, love it. OS and whatever games I'm playing installed on it. Playing Witcher 3, archeage and SWTOR currently. When we are in a group and porting places the guys without SSD's take forever to spawn at the new location. Witcher 3 loads incredibly fast.
Before this I had 2 80gb Vertex 2's in SSD, I'll never go back.

Edit: An ssd is the best thing you can do to a pc. Mechanical drives are the last bottleneck to speed.

I think tiger direct sent me an email with ocz arc for 40 bux with that McAfee subscription trial thing. You need to cancel ur subscription after 10-11 months or you card gets charged. Check it out it should be on for the weekend.

Not in my experience. MMOs are the main type of games I'd put on an ssd. Basically any game that will be loading data on the fly. Anything else that might take a long time to load or frequent loading of levels gets second priority. Games played infrequently or older games where load times wont really matter get put on the HDD.

It was on sale for a couple of days at that price over at Micro Center, I missed the sale. If you can get it for $89, it's not a bad deal. After a little research and reading reviews, I eventually pick it up for about $98, but had a $20 off a single $75 item at Micro Center, knocking it down to $78.

Yeah, I know. My point is my opportunity to get it for 89.99 with the coupon code is long gone. Getting it $97.99 + 8% sale tax = $105.83 on amazon is an even worse deal than if I just ordered it off newegg for $99.99 with no code.

The mx200 is $100 right now, bx100 is $90 on amazon. I consider these comparable to the evo.
The 850 pro is the odd man out at a 40 to 50% premium

Hey, OP, Fry's has had this drive more than once for $89/no rebate over the past couple months, but you have to sign up for their email and use their promo codes, which are personalized.

Tiger Direct has also had this drive for around the same price, but there was a rebate involved.

The BX100 certainly isn't comparable to the evo (more like Ultra II level) the MX200 however is just a notch below but it's still more expensive as per the discounted rates posted above.

It's now $79 @ Fry's today only!

Just checked Fry's. It's not.

Edit: I signed up for their promos and checked the code I got in the email. I the page spread with the drive for $79 and clicked it in the ad, but then it turned up no matches on their website. So it was real, but I guess they went quick. Boy, what an amazing deal. The best I've seen on the drive ever, even better than the one I hoped to get when I posted this thread. I must have just missed it.

Close enough to where most people won't notice the performance difference.
It's no surprise they are all roughly the same price.

I'm sure it sold out fast @ that price.

It'll probably come around again. Keep your eyes peeled.

Once you go SSD you will never want to go back.

My 850 EVO was DOA.. haha. My 1-year old 840 EVO in my HTPC works without any faults.

Amazon return was painless.
