Samsung 840Pro firmware update destructive?

They already have a FM update for the Samsung 840... the Magician can do it for me but A) is that the best way to do it, and B) does it wipe my disk?

I have my junk backed up, but I don't really want to have to recover my OS drive...

It depends, sometimes a firmware flash is destructive, sometimes not.
They usually tell you.
As for the FW update, unless it is important/critical, or you have the issue the FW fixes, then usually, you should wait for other people to test it out.

I see FW updates as the product of hasty engineering, and sometimes a hasty update is worse than no update. My rule is this, if the drive is working OK as is, I leave it alone until there are a lot of pros and cons posted.

It is not destructive. I have never has a drive firmware update fail in a destructive manner. Nevertheless, mistakes can happen, though the probability is low, and drives have been bricked. So it is good practice to make an image backup before doing a firmware update on a disk drive.

If you cannot back it up then the best advice is don't update the firmware if you don't need to as Corky said

No, I have Acronis full images as my normal backup, but I've never updated FM for either of my SSD's or my mobo... so just wondering.

Traditionally Samsung updates have never been destructive so I don't see why that would change with this one.
