Yep, Pretty much the same I get with my 830 on Sata2. There is a new release, Magacian 4.0 which is a complete rehaul from 3.2, check it out.

These are my Crytsal Disk Bench Results:

This is the result I get in Samsung's Magician 4:

Although it looks a little low on the write side, I believe the 840 non pro has a max of 130MB/s write speed. It shouldn't affect general speed much as most of the time it's reading from the disk. If you are writing to the disk from a HDD or a Network or a DVD, these are all likely to be slower than 130MB/s anyway. (except maybe the HDD which could be on par.)

Thanks Deders. Just wanted to confirm that i have setup the ssd drive properly and getting the speeds upto the mark. The new magician software seems good with the interface will give it a try. And also my magician software shows an firmware update is available but iam not sure whether i can go with it , since i fear that it may cause issues with the windows and results in reinstallation of OS.

Yup right , this non pro drive has low write speeds but good read speeds ( which will be useful to me since i will be reading mostly ). The below is the spec

Sequential Read Speed Up to 530MB/s
Sequential Write Speed Up to 130MB/s
Random Read Speed Up to 85K IOPS
Random Write Speed Up to 32K IOPS

By the way i bought this 840 one since neither the 830 or the 840 pro wasn't available in my city.

I seem to remember that for the 830 at least, updating firmware doesn't cause damage to the data so I would presume the same or the 840 series, and I've soon nothing on the internet to contradict this.

As far as i saw on the internet only OCZ drives are updated without causing any damage to the data on the drive using the OCZ tool it seems. Hence iam not sure regarding the samsung one. And also as you say 830 can be updated but not sure about the 840 since it uses different controller

Samsung SSD 830 uses Samsung MCX controller
Samsung SSD 840 uses Samsung MDX controller

I have 2 840 pros, 2 840 series and updated the firmware within windows and no damage to the software. Not one glitch.

Thanks for the update Drsignguy. I will go ahead and update it. Also can you please let me know whether you updated it using the magician and the drive had OS installed on it ? I heard that updating from the magician fails mostly and shows error while updating. Is there a possibility of bricking? And also do you know what has been fixed in the recent firmware update for the 840 series?

Thanks in advance

No problem:)

I used the magician that came with the new Ssd. Each 840 pro had Os on them. 1 with windows 8 and the other, windows 7. The secondary drive were the 840 series and updated them also within the same Os as each Pro series. As for "bricking", I guess there is always that chance and so far the odds are in my favor. Don't really know what the firmware fix was, Magician automatically checked for the update once I installed it after all my updates for each Os were complete.

Good to hear:biggrin:. Then i guess i have to try my odds here :). Was just curious to know whats the update about. I saw other thread here that the recent one for 840 pro was to improve dirty drive write performance which obviously is useful for laptops in low power mode and doesn't benefit desktops. So if its the same for 840 series i may not take the risk since this is a 3 day old drive and i really like the snappiness while using the pc. ;)

Got an update regarding the firmware

840 series and 840 pro get updated to versions DXT07B0Q and DXM04B0Q

It improves the “dirty drive” write performance

Dirty drive is like a fragmented disk drive. When a user writes then deletes data on to the drive, parts of that data are stored in different clusters. After a while of doing so, your drive will have gathered deleted bits in its sectors (cells for SSDs) that are marked for block deletion later.

Apparently many of them think that dirty drive state is performance based on the disk running in low power mode i.e laptops which is wrong. It is indeed an block collection of marked deletion bits.
